DeColores!
Back at the December School of Leaders, we were discussing the Cursillo Area Cores, or lack thereof, and it got me to thinking outside of the box a little bit. I’m going to put my own twist on where I believe the term may have originated. As usual, I turned to Mr. Webster’s famous book known as the dictionary and looked up “Core.”
Dictionary definition of Core: A Core is the innermost strand of a rope or cable or an electric wire or cord; A computer magnet memory; A group of people; The inside of a baseball or golf ball; A central or foundational part of a machine; A Core provides strength and prevents breakage, shredding and tearing.
You’ve all heard the old expression of He or She is “Solid to the Core” I’ll go ahead and give you a short list of expressions to mull around. “Rotten to the Core” “Honest to the Core” “Hard Core Republican or Democrat” “Hardened to the Core” “We must get to the Core of the problem”
In the real good ole days when the radiator of your car was malfunctioning they would check to see if the Core was still good. If so, the radiator could be repaired.
The Core, my friends, is where the Strength is -- the Power, if you will. In the Core of an apple, for instance, are the Seeds and in the seeds is the Life. The seeds are what we plant in the soil and what sprouts and grows and becomes the roots and the stalk or trunk. The leaves in turn spring fourth as do the branches and then eventually the blossoms, which produce the fruit. Of course you all know about the parable of the seed sown on the good or poor soil!
Having said all of this, before anything happens, the very core must die to itself and break open and then the seeds repeat the process. Bottom Line --- the Core is in the center of everything!
Must I say more? I would hope that you all would desire and strive to be more connected to the center (where the action is.) Just to repeat it one more time, the center is the Core, the part that really makes Cursillo Go or should I say Grow!
With Love, Respect and Peace to all of you! Deacon George Miller

On January 21st we were cancelled due to snow and high winds. Our next time together is February 18, 2012 .Come share in the good discussions, prayers, songs and fellowship. The coffee/tea pot is on, friends are coming, and we’d like to see you there. We meet at St. Michael the Archangel, Findlay Ohio in the Teachers’ Lounge at 9:00 am – Noon.
The Spiritual Advisor’s presentation for January will be by Sr. Edna Michel. She will share her thoughts about information “Evangelization Catholic Style,” in “Catholic Evangelization the Heart of Ministry,” Chapter 9 on Page 143. High points are: Reflecting on evangelization Catholic style, Implications of what Catholics learn from the fundamentalist appeal and action steps that we, as Catholics, can take.
Our lay presentation will begin with Chapter 3 page 70 “The Method of the Cursillo Movement,” and we will discuss the three stages of the movement. The first is to select environments and candidates [Pre- to Cursillo]. The second is foster an authentic and ongoing conversion on part of the cursillistas [Cursillo]. The third, is to reinsert those who have lived their Cursillo weekend, into the places they came from, to accompany them in their work of evangelizing of those environments.
Ref: “The Fundamental Ideals of the Cursillo Movement”.
We also have available the new book for 2012 that our Spiritual Advisor’s will be using, “Study of the Charism.” This book is highly recommended by the National Cursillo. I’m looking forward to getting a jump start on 2012, and start reading it now.

From Palanca Person Sharon Decant:
February 22nd this year is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. Strange as it may seem, Lent originally meant "spring season". Today it is a season of sorrowful reflection that culminates into the joyful season of new beginnings with the celebration of the Resurrection of Christ.
In the early Church it is believed that the people celebrated the Resurrection of Christ on a weekly basis and fasted every Friday to commemorate His death.
One cannot know joy without knowing sorrow. And so we have the forty days or so of earnestly reflecting on our personal failings, our sins. Why forty days? Some believe it dates to the many references to the number 40 in the Bible; such as the 40 days of rain in the Great Flood in Noah's time; the 40 years of the Israelites' wanderings in the desert; the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the desert; and the 40 hours Jesus is said to have been in the tomb, from midday Good Friday to early Easter Sunday morning.
It does not seem that the 40 days observance was of Apostolic tradition though, because of the great diversity of practice and duration in the different Churches in the East and in the West over the centuries.
For some, Lent lasted 2 or 3 weeks and people did not fast every day. Others observed Lent for 6, 7 or even 8 weeks, fasting every day with a very strict fast during Holy Week, with some eating only 1 or 2 meals during the entire week. The abstinence was diversifed. Some abstained from all the flesh of all living creatures including fish, while others ate only fish, and others abstained from even eggs, cheese and milk, eating only dry bread. This general prohibition of eggs and milk during Lent is believed to have resulted in the blessing of the eggs and making gifts of eggs at Easter.
The ordinary rule was to eat only one meal a day and that was to be taken in the evening only. However there were often dispensations made upon the condition of making a contribution to some pious work. Finally, the rules were relaxed and down through the centuries solid food was permitted not to exceed 8 oz. after midday but before evening.
And we think it is difficult today to fast and abstain only on Ash Wednesdays and on Good Fridays?
Before Vatican II many may remember some strict rules of fast and abstinence during Lent and especially during Holy Week. Many may remember the abstinence on ALL Fridays of the year. Even though we no longer have to observe the "no meat" rule on ordinary Fridays we are supposed to replace it with, in our Cursillo vernacular, "Palanca", which is prayer, self-sacrifice, and /or works of mercy on those days.
Prayer is keeping company with God. And what good company He is. Prayer is said to be and definitely is an adventure, always challenging us to the mystery of God and the mystery within us. It is exciting when we discover God in our everyday life, the various ways He intervenes on our behalf.
Self-sacrifice, is not only fasting, but of giving up desires we have. One year one of my sons and his wife gave up eating all meat from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday afternoon, including all Sundays. It was difficult because they were invited to many restaurants during this time which has not happened in its intensity of invites before or since. That was a joyful Easter they will never forget. Other self-sacrifices were reported as giving up all chocolate, beef, soda, beer, TV, Facebook, makeup, Oreo cookies, hot dogs, coffee, unnesessary talking, cell phones and stayng up late on weekends. Another joyous Easter Acts of mercy. Giving of ourselves to others. Givng our treasures to someone we know who needs them and we know they can never repay us. There are so many works of mercy, volumes of books have been written on them.
If we practice the Cursillo method during Lent as we should be doing every day, the distractions and the afore mentioned and other self-sacrifices and acts of mercy will draw us closeer to God. The self-sacrifices especially create emptiness within us that the Holy Spirit runs to fill.
A true Lent in our hearts will enrich our lives, deepen our relationship with Christ and with others so that the graces and majesty of God will fill everyone with the joy of Easter.....every day.
Happy Lent. Don't forget every day palanca and DeColores!
From Mary Ann Hohman, Precursillo Chairperson:
We have been exploring the role of the Cursillo sponsor over the last two months. We will continue with this in March, but for February, I want to spend some time on the upcoming spring weekends.
The men’s weekend is March 15-18, and the women’s weekend is April 26-29. Candidate applications are due March 1 for the men, and April 12 for the women. At this time, we have 3 new applications for the men’s weekend and 4 other applications on file to be invited. There are no new applications for the women’s weekend, and nine on file to be invited.
If you have applications for either the men’s or women’s weekends, please send them in as soon as possible. I need to process the apps before they can be invited. If you are sponsoring a couple, both apps need to be sent at the same time. Be sure that everything is filled out, and all signatures are in place, or the invitation may be delayed. If one spouse does not want to make the weekend, or is of another faith tradition, please contact me, or a member of the Secretariat.
As stated earlier, there are a number of applications on file. Candidates are given three invitations, and if they do not make the weekend, their application becomes inactive. Many of the candidates have been invited twice already. If you have sent in applications for candidates in the last 2 years, and the candidates have yet to attend a weekend, please check with him or her, and see if interest is still there. Please let me know this as soon as possible, and I will either hold the application, or if the person is not interested anymore, place the app in the inactive file. If you are listed as a sponsor on an app, and I do not hear from you, I will be in touch with you soon to determine if your candidate is interested or not.
Invitations for the men’s weekend will go out the middle of February, and women’s invitations will go out the end of March, so get those apps in. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me (if you phone, please leave a message).
May God bless you during this winter season.

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
What a wonderful time of the year. I didn’t always feel like that about the starting of another year. I never like to be new and starting over at something. I like the tried and true, the sure and faithful. I like knowing what lies ahead and trusting in the past experiences to carry me on. This year feels different. What is it about 2012? Was it the homily I heard on New Year’s Eve that invited me this year to have a heart “full of grace” like Mary? Or is it just being older, and hopefully wiser as life goes on. Maybe it is the reality of the Incarnation sinking more deeply into my soul. The world has been here for millions of years, but a little over 2000 years ago our God became one with us in a way that had not happened before. Our God, born in a stable, a baby, helpless, defenseless, dependent on mama and daddy for everything! What kind of a God is that? What kind of a God would empty himself of the fullness of divinity (Phil. 2:6-11) to take on the fullness of humanity? One who is truly God became truly human. At times it is more than our minds can comprehend, but not our hearts.
The gift of the Incarnation is truly a gift to be celebrated. God with us! Not just to be prayed in Advent and celebrated Christmas Eve and until the Feast of Epiphany, but to be celebrated in our hearts every day. It is the gift of our God coming to show us how to live and love and laugh, to pray and cry and suffer and die, and rise and live forever. Think about it. What does the incarnation mean to you? How will you let the incarnation be a reality in your lives this year? How will 2012 be different from any other year?
There is a poem written by John Shea called Sharon’s Christmas Prayer. The poem is about a little 5 year old girl telling the Christmas story. When she gets to the end of the story where the baby was born she asks the question “And do you know who he was?” She answers the question herself. “The baby was God.” And then Shea says,
“And she jumped in the air, whirled round, dove into the sofa and buried her head under the cushion, which is the only proper response to the Good News of the Incarnation.”
Does the Good News of the Incarnation, make you jump in the air and whirl around? Does it make you buried your head in sheer joy and incredulity at the news? Maybe we would be more faithful to all that God calls us to if we did. Remember your first Cursillo, or the first time you worked a team. Weren’t there moments where God was so close that all you wanted to do was jump and whirl and hide your face at the shear wonder of God so alive in your midst. So evident in the faces of the men and women around you, in the words shared from the hearts of each witness, in the depth of the prayer and Eucharistic celebrations?
Hold on to all those signs of the Incarnation and let your hearts be full of grace as we enter this New Year. Our God is alive and one with us. Let the celebration continue this whole year through.

Many make firm New Year resolutions. Often at 12;01 AM January 1 the firm resolutions turn to Jell-O and are last seen jetting their way south on I-75 never to be seen again. The reasons vary like gas prices at the pump. Some reasons can be attributed to a lack of a definite plan, not taking steps to achieve the goal and having no plan for the end result. And of course, plain laziness.
Good intentions are not enough. Everyone has heard that the road to hell is paved with good intentions, or hell is paved with good intentions or hell is full of good intentions. One thing is certain; hell is not the place anyone really wants to be (except many Dante). And evil in the world almost always comes from ignorance Understanding and knowledge of accurate information, tools, resources are crucial to ensure good intentions become sound practices.
The dawning of each day is Christmas. It is a gift. God has given us many gifts, so numerous they would fill the universe. But what good is a gift if it is still wrapped and not opened?
One of God's many gifts to us is the gift of Pope Benedict XVI. The message he gave on January 1 was primarily to young people but it encompasses all of us. He said the world must be looked at in its truth and we are not to be overwhelmed by trying experiences. A shadow has fallen over our time preventing us from seeing the light of day. In this shadow, human hearts continue to wait for the dawn of day. There must be a positive value of life - a desire to spend our lives in the service of the good. We as witnesses first must live the life that is proposed to others. Education and formation are necessary to produce enthusiasm and idealism that can offer new hope to the world.
Without saying these are the very goals of Cursillo. At the dawning of each day our Christmas gifts must be opened to give us the firm resolutions in this New Year to do daily palanca, thereby achieving the goals of Cursillo and Pope Benedict XVI. With daily palanca we can look to the future with Hope.

The Role of the Cursillo Sponsor, Part II
Last month, we explored the purpose of sponsoring in the Cursillo movement. This month, we will explore what the sponsor should know and do when sponsoring a candidate to the weekend.
First, let’s take a moment to review the purpose of the Cursillo movement, which is to help each person fulfill his or her baptismal responsibility: to evangelize those around us. Our baptism calls us to spread the good news of Jesus Christ. This comes about by identifying our environments and bringing Jesus Christ to it.
Now that you have identified your environments, and have started to look for potential candidates for a Cursillo weekend, there are several things you need to know. First is knowledge of the goal of the Cursillo movement. As was discussed last month, the goal is not to recruit workers for the parish; not to change the candidate’s view of the Catholic faith; not to get people involved in working with the homeless, right to life, and many other ministries within the Church; and not to produce leaders for other movements or organizations in the Church. Cursillo is to make Christian communities possible in our environments, whether this be family, friends, work, neighborhoods, and so on.
Next, we need to understand who should or should not attend a Cursillo weekend. There are three categories of people: those who should go; those who can go; and those who should not go. Those who should go are people who are the backbone of their environments, who are able to make their own decisions, who are able to receive the sacraments, and are natural leaders. Those who can go are living their Catholic faith the best they can, and are able to receive the sacraments. Those who should not go are people who have psychological or emotional problems, those with addictions, those unable to receive the message of Cursillo, and those unable to receive the sacraments. Non-Catholics are not permitted to attend the Cursillo weekend. There are similar weekends available, and this person should be encouraged to attend one of these weekends. Please contact your area core, or a member of the Secretariat for more information about these weekends.
Know your potential candidate. This would include such things as marital status, number of children, parish the person attends, the person’s environments, and why this person should attend a Cursillo weekend. If you know this information, you will know if the person is a baptized, practicing Catholic, who is able to receive the sacraments. This is the information that is on the application as well.
A special note needs to be made about couples: Get to know both the husband and wife. Both should be free to attend the weekend as described above. If one is interested in living the weekend, but the other is not, or one is unable to attend as described above, please contact a member of your area core, or a member of the Secretariat. A spiritual advisor will meet with you and the couple to explain the Cursillo movement, and help determine if it would have an adverse effect on the marriage.
It is important if you are going to sponsor a person for a Cursillo weekend that you be walking the talk. If you are not participating in a group reunion and Ultreya, it is like giving a person a new car, but not the keys to start it. Group reunion and Ultreya are key components to living out the life of a Cursillista. If you are not involved in a group reunion and Ultreya, consider having a group sponsor the candidate. This will allow the candidate to have that exposure to both groups that is so necessary to living the Cursillo method.
Just a reminder: Men’s applications will be due no later than Mar. 1, 2012, and women’s applications will be due no later than April 12, 2012.
Next month we will explore what the sponsor needs to do before the Cursillo weekend.
If you have questions or concerns about sponsorship, please feel free to contact me.
Have a very Happy New Year!

After I was asked to write the Spiritual Directors’ message for this month, I found myself praying to the Holy Spirit for guidance. My thoughts were centering around Advent, the change to the new Roman Missal, Christmas, or what we should look for in the new year. Then, with the help of the Spirit, I was directed to one of my computer files which I have named, “Thought’s for the day.” There among the many things from one liners to longer stories was the following “Letter in the night” which challenges us to examine our own Conscience as a part of preparing our hearts for the second coming of Christ which is the real purpose of Advent.
LETTER IN THE NIGHT Author Unknown
One day a woman named Louise fell asleep in her bed and dreamed a very fitful dream. She dreamed that someone in Hell wrote a letter to her, and it was to be delivered to her by a messenger.
The messenger passed between the lakes of burning fire and brimstone that occupies Hell and found his way to the door that would lead him to the outside world.
Louise dreamed that the messenger walked to her house, came inside and gently but firmly woke Louise. He gave her the message, saying only that a friend had written it to her from Hell.
Louise, in her dream with trembling hands, took the letter and read:
My Friend, I stand in Judgment now, And feel that you're to blame somehow. Never did you point the way. You knew the Lord in truth and glory, But never did you tell the story. My knowledge then was very dim; You could have led me safe to Him. Though we lived together on the earth, You never told me of the second birth, And now I stand this day condemned, Because you failed to mention Him. You taught me many things, that's true. I called you "friend" and trusted you, But I learn now that it's too late, You could have kept me from this fate. We walked by day and talked by night, And yet you showed me not the Light. You let me live, and love, and die, You knew I'd never live on high. Yes, I called you "friend" in life, And trusted you through joy and strife. And yet on coming to the end, I cannot, now, call you "My Friend." Marsha
After reading the letter, Louise awoke. The dream was still so real in her mind and sweat dropped from her body in pools. She swore she could still smell the acrid smell of brimstone and smoke from her room. As she contemplated the meaning of her dream, she realized that as a Christian, she had failed in her duty to "go out to all the world and preach the gospel." As she thought of that, she promised herself that the next day, she would call Marsha and invite her to church with her.
The next morning she called Marsha, and this was the conversation: "Hello Bill, is Marsha there?" "Louise, you don't know?" "No, Bill, know what?" "Marsha WAS KILLED LAST NIGHT IN A CAR ACCIDENT. I thought you knew."
Fellow Cursillistas, is this our testimony? Are we witnessing about Jesus’ presence in our lives to our friends that we are with every day? Or will there be friends of ours in Hell, asking us why we did not tell them about JESUS?
Is there someone that we put off witnessing to or asking to be a candidate for Cursillo but keep thinking, “Well, sometime in the future”? Let’s not wait till we get a “LETTER IN THE NIGHT”.
May your Advent and Christmas season be filled with happiness as we prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus, followed by a blessed and prosperous New Year.

We meet normally monthly on the third Saturday of the month, at St. Michael’s in Findlay, in the Teacher’s Lounge. November’s meeting was Focus Day in Fostoria St Wendelin’s. Our next one is Saturday December17, 2011, from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Our lay presentation will finish Chapter 2 of the Essence of the Cursillo Movement, what there is about this movement, which calls us to share the fundamentals of being a Christian. the methods we can use to develop a core group, to go more deeply into our personal vocations, and the will to use them. Ref: “The Fundamental Ideals of the Cursillo Movement”.
The Spiritual Advisor’s presentation for December will be by Fr. Ed Littelmann. The focus is on a Catholic Evangelization: Word, Worship, and Service. How God’s word comes to us in many ways. Rooted in Jesus’ revelation, God’s grace offers salvation to all people and invites us to respond as Christian disciples. Such a response needs constant encouragement, as we journey to God. This journey invites us to evangelize others along the way. In our busy world, we need to hear Jesus’ words again and again.
Come share in the good discussions and prayers. The coffee/tea pot is on. The tables are ready. See you there.

From Palanca Person Sharon Decant:
There was an intriguing documentary on the "Star of Bethlehem" which was aired on EWTN. It was not until the waning days of the 20th Century that some amazing revelations occurred.
The Congressional Library of Congress and the British Library confirmed that Josephus, the first Century Jewish historian had written that King Herod died in 1BC not 4BC as previously believed. Such were all the reprintings until the 1500's when the printing press came into being and a possible type-setting error was made.
With the Hubbell Telescope one can see deep into space and see the positions of all the celestial heavens as they were in any given year. Why was this so important? Great astronomers such as Keppler who were looking for validation of the great Star of Bethlehem were looking in the wrong years. If King Herod died in 1BC then Jesus would have been born in or before 1BC not 4BC.
The documentary stated that the Magi were actually magicians/ astronomers from a very prestigious school called the "Eastern School" in Babylon which is present day Iraq. The school explained natural science. We do not know how many magi there were, only that there were 3 gifts. We gave them ethic names to indicate various nations. Jesus came for all men not just for the Jewish people. It is believed that at least one had great knowledge of Jewish Scriptures.
The People of the East on a hot night often slept on their rooftops contemplating on the stars and constellations. There was no air pollution, no bright lights, so their eyes became accustomed to the dark night and they could see very well the heavenly celestial occurrences with a naked eye. They believed that the stars communicated with them as to God's awesomeness. They were signs from God. It is imperative to mention that to use astrology to run one's life is absolutely forbidden. The Magi did not do this. They watched the stars and compared facts with the facts of Scripture and science. This is what they saw.
In September of 3BC Jupiter, called the King Planet, which is 11 times the size of earth, came into conjunction with Regulus, also known as Rex, the King Star. This was not unusual, but what was to come was. The Constellation Virgo, meaning virgin, followed Jupiter in the sky and into the Constellation of Leo the Lion. The Lion was a symbol of the tribe of Judah.
Retrograde is like traveling in a car passing other cars. As the pass is completed and looking back it seems as though those cars have stopped. Of course they haven't.
Jupiter now retrogrades 3 times over Regulus, like it was "crowning" it. Stars are stationary, but planets are not and we can view events in the sky like this because we are standing on a revolving platform. This seemingly "crowning" effect continued for 9 months until June of 2BC. Was Jesus conceived in September of 3BC? No one knows.
In June of 2BC Jupiter went into conjunction with Venus, the Mother Planet, stacking onto each other like a figure 8. To the naked eye it was indeed the brightest "Star" in the sky. The Magi saw this and reading Scripture were convinced these were indeed signs of a great king being born of a virgin and set out to follow the "Star" as it crossed the sky. In October, again in November, and finally in December of 2BC the "Star", in retrogrades, stopped over Jerusalem. King Herod was not aware of any unusual celestial activity because he did not use the facts of natural science with Scriptures. By the time the Magi arrived in Bethlehem, the "Star" was directly over, not a cave, but the house where Jesus was living. He was already a toddler, and the date the Magi found Jesus was December 25 2BC.
As we look into the wondrous star-studded night sky there are divine truths we cannot deny. There are 100 billion galaxies with each having at least 100 billon stars. God named and placed each in a specific area. There are 100 billon cells in each of our bodies. God counts every hair on our heads. He is the Divine Maker of all. The stars are there to communicate to us the wonderment of it all.
This Christmas let us not forget the "Star" by which He communicated to us His first coming. We need also to joyfully anticipate His second coming. Let's us be ready for both with daily palanca, beginning with a decade of Mother Mary's Rosary.
Have a very blessed Christmas!

The Lavey family shared the following witness at the women’s Cursillo closing in October. We thank Mary Beth for putting their experience into words…
Rita Lavey, our mom, had heart surgery on September 22nd, 2011 to repair or replace the mitro valve, the tricuspid valve and to do a scarring method to decrease the heart going into A-fib. On September 24th an emergency abdominal surgery was performed to explore where she was bleeding because her blood volume had dropped significantly. Rita never really bounced back from that second surgery; she was extremely weak, so weak she had no strength to swallow on her own. She had an NG tube inserted to provide her nourishment.
Rita left Toledo Hospital on October 11, 2011 for Rehab at Orchard Villa in Oregon Ohio. She was there for 24 hours before she returned to Toledo with a diagnosis of pneumonia. During the next 3 days Rita was in and out of delirium, she spoke about conversations with her guardian angel Maxwell and another angel Tom; she also had conversations with her Aunt Jane and others it seemed. On Saturday October 15th the doctors stated that she needed an increase in water which would help the confusion and a change in the antibiotic to better deal with the pneumonia.
On October 16, 2011 Sunday morning Rita’s blood pressure dropped and the question was raised how aggressively we wanted them to treat her. Our response was what is her prognosis? Yesterday she needed more water; now, today… One of the family doctors came in, assessed mom and said we needed to gather the family together quickly as she was in pulmonary failure and may only have a few hours left. The family was called and mom was moved to a private room where we could be close to her – all thirty of us! One of our sisters was in Dayton, another in England. Aunt Joyce was travelling back from the U.P. All were on their way to mom but would they make in time?
We asked if the priest was still in the hospital. They said no, but he would come back. Father came back and had Holy Communion for us. He said mom no longer needed the Eucharist because she was in the presence of Jesus. He said we could help her on her journey this day so he touched each host to the lips of mom before giving Holy Communion to each of her children. What a powerful moment for us. We felt so united with mom in this Sacrament of Holy Communion.
Mom’s other three sisters came to say their goodbyes to her, and we were all happy that everybody else made to the hospital in time to see mom too. Joyce was the last sister to arrive. She whispered a greeting to mom and then turned to greet the rest of the thirty. And at that moment mom opened her eyes clapped her hands and said, “I’m so surprised you’re all here! I heard you singing Happy Birthday to me!” She clapped and we all clapped and cheered. Her face was glowing, we could all understand her, her voice was strong and she was happy! She was with us for 12 minutes; we all got to kiss her and tell her how much we loved her. She told us it was so beautiful; she wanted to share more we could tell, but it was like the Lord said telling them it is BEAUTIFUL was enough!
She quietly went back into her deep sleep for about an hour or so then she opened her eyes for a moment and said I love you and gave a kiss in the air. She closed her eyes and did not open them again, but about half an hour or so later she placed her arms together like holding a baby and quietly said, “my baby girl” and kissed the air. Peggy lived for only four days after being born in 1960. Peggy and mom were together along with Dad, Uncle Dave and Grandma and Grandpa. At 7:15 pm my mom breathed her last breath…..it was peaceful and beautiful. The Lord had gifted this roomful of people with the firsthand knowledge that “Heaven is for Real”, that our loved ones help with the journey to the place that Jesus has prepared for us.

The Role of the Cursillo Sponsor
This fall’s Focus Day on Nov. 19 was about the sponsor’s role in the Cursillo movement. Over the next few months, the Pre-Cursillo column will look at some of the concepts that were presented.
As we prepare for the spring Cursillo weekends, this is a good time to look at the sponsor, and what preparation he or she should be doing before inviting a candidate. This preparation is essential so that the candidate will have a positive experience of Cursillo.
An important resource as to responsibilities of the sponsor is a booklet written by the National Cursillo Office, ‘The Cursillo Movement’s Sponsor’s Booklet’. This is a small booklet outlining what sponsors need to know before sponsoring a candidate. The information presented at the Focus Day is contained in this booklet. It is a must read for anyone considering being a sponsor.
First it is important to know what Cursillo isn’t. Cursillo is not for getting more workers in a parish; it is not for fixing the problems in people’s lives; it is not to get people to change their out-look on the Catholic faith; it is not to get people involved in social service activities; and it is not a way to create leaders for other movements or organizations.
The Cursillo Movement’s focus is to help each person fulfill his or her baptismal responsibility: to evangelize those around us. Our baptism calls us to spread the good news of Jesus Christ. This comes about by identifying our environments and bringing Jesus Christ to it.
So the first step a sponsor needs to take is to know your environment, and begin to identify potential candidates, those people who have the talents needed to evangelize the environment. Get to know that person, and his or her spouse, well. Ask yourself these questions: Is this person a potential candidate for a Cursillo weekend? Will this person be a changing influence in his or her environment (family, workplace, neighborhood, social gatherings, etc.)? If you can answer ‘yes’ to these questions, then introduce Cursillo to the person. Invite this potential candidate to your friendship group and Ultreya before inviting him or her to a weekend. This will help your candidate to understand what Cursillo is about. If it is not for this person, you will then know.
By first understanding what the role of the sponsor is, you will be able to bring candidates to the weekends who will be a part of the Christian community that works with others to bring Jesus Christ into the world.
If you would like a copy of ‘The Cursillo Movements’ Sponsors’ Booklet’ please contact a member of the Secretariat. We will be happy to send you one. Know and do.
Just a reminder: Men’s applications will be due no later than Mar. 1, 2012, and women’s applications will be due no later than April 12, 2012.
May each of you have a blessed Christmas and a very Happy New Year.

Toledo Diocesan Cursillo Mission Statement
Cursillo is a Catholic Lay Movement embraced by the Diocese of Toledo to bring heart closer to Jesus Christ in order to transform society and be of service to the whole church. It is our mission to form small Christian Communities to deepen Spirituality in others and us. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Greetings, blessings and all good things to you sisters and brothers in Christ.
Welcome to our new sisters who recently experienced Cursillo Weekend 240. May your journey of faith throughout your fourth day be profitable to all you meet.
In one of the groups I belong to we are using Fr. Larry Richard’s book “Be A Man” for our reflection/discussion. The very first sentence of his first paragraph is, “You are going to die.” (We are hoping the story goes up from there. And it does.) What he is getting at is what is our goal in life. Given the fact that we are going to die what are we doing with our life and where are we going, how are we getting there? We believe our goal is heaven to be one with our God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and as Rita Lavey conveyed to us, all our sisters and brothers who have gone before us.
Can you imagine the Great Group Reunion going on in heaven in the Fifth Day? Wow! That is our ultimate goal to get there and join in. There is a place for us, each one of us. Our purpose in life is to Know God, Father Son and Holy Spirit, Love Him and Serve Him in this life and to be happy with Him (and them) forever in heaven. Cursillo is our methodology of doing just that. To Know Him is our piety leading us to holiness; our Loving Him is forming us as His disciples, studying all the ways He teaches us to live; and Serving Him is our acts of Evangelization- bringing the good news of salvation to all around us.
The Spiritual Advisors have received some long awaited ‘good news’. We have a final draft working document of new rollos for the spiritual directors and new meditations for the three day weekends. In a first cursory reading they look very promising and much improved over a manual that has to be at least 40 year’s old. This new manual also includes a more precise understanding of the “role” of the spiritual advisor in the Three Phases of the Movement.
I remember hearing from our lay leaders in the School of Leaders their interpretations of the Spiritual Advisor’s talks, like “Grace”, “Faith” and “Obstacles to a Life in Grace” and I thought how well they were done and what great insights the laity have in these areas. With a fresh look at these weekend talks and meditations I believe there will be a deeper growth and understanding of these topics for all of us. If any of you veteran professors who like to offer suggestions from any of your notes from past weekend’s, you know, those doodles in the margins when you thought, “this would be a good thing to say here” or “this would be a good example to use…” please send them to us (Sister Edna, Fr. Skip or myself) so we can include them in our reviews of this final draft document.
As we, the English speaking Catholic Church begin to use the New Roman Missal; I hope all of you will be supportive and helpful to others who may be confused or resistant. It is an opportunity for all of us to go deeper in our study, preparation and participation of the sacred liturgy. Be positive and look for ways to grow.
Ultreya! Fr. Jim Brown

The SOL normally meets monthly on the third Saturday of the month; however, on November 19th we will be participating in the Cursillo Focus Day at St. Wendelin’s in Fostoria. What a wonderful opportunity to come together as brothers and sisters, to sing and listen, and talk about who we are and who we can be. Go ahead – give this day to Cursillo.
Our next SOL will be on Saturday December17, 2011, from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM Marty Charney, Rector SOL
WITNESS:
Dear Lord, help me to remove from my mind every thought or opinion, which you would not sanction, every feeling from my heart which You would not approve.
Grant that I may spend the hours of the day gladly working with You according to Your will.
Help me just for today and be with me in it. In the long hours of work, that I may not grow weary or slack in serving you.
In conversations, that they may not be occasions of uncharitableness.
In moments of fatigue and illness, that I may be mindful of others rather than myself.
In temptations, that I may be generous and loyal, so that when the day is over I may lay it at Your feet, with its successes which are all Yours, and its failures which are all my own, and feel that life is real and peaceful, and blessed when spent with You as the Guest of my soul. Amen
This is a special prayer from my daughter, Rosanne. She died six years ago August 21. All of a sudden, I had memorized it and I feel she “railroaded” it for her dad and mother. It had to be by divine intervention as I never tried to memorize it at all, but I just “had it” all of a sudden.
It has me baffled and I just thought I would share this with my Cursillo friends.
Decolores!

From PreCursillo Person Mary Ann Hohman:
The women’s weekend is completed, and it is time to start thinking about next spring’s weekends. Cursillo #241 for men is March 15-18, 2012, and #242 for women is April 26-29, 2012. Applications for both weekends will be due two weeks prior to the weekend. Men’s applications will be due no later than Mar. 1, 2012, and women’s applications will be due no later than April 12, 2012.
This is the time to be looking around your environments for possible candidates, and ‘Make a friend, be a friend, bring that friend to Christ’. If you are not sure of your responsibilities when sponsoring a candidate, the fall focus day on Nov. 19, at Fostoria St. Wendelin, will be a Cursillo sponsor’s workshop. A team from Cursillo Region V will present what we need to know as a sponsor. Please consider attending this focus day if you have or will have a candidate in the future.
As you have candidate’s applications, please send them in. Remember that we need to have applications for both husband and wife. Please be sure that the candidate and sponsor applications are completely filled out, and signed. If one spouse is reluctant, or not interested in Cursillo, please contact me so that I can pass the information on to one of our spiritual directors, who will work with you.
If you have questions, please feel free to contact me. I look forward to receiving applications for the spring.
WITNESS:
It was All Saints Day in our church last week and our granddaughter who lives in Longmont, Colorado goes to St John the Baptist Catholic School there. Her class was given an assignment to choose a saint and to dress up like that saint. When I saw the picture of her it really touched me! The saint she picked was Saint Candida Maria de Jesus of northern Spain. It just was a very good reminder that the saints have been such a great gift to us, just as our children and grandchildren are! Here is the profile for this very recently canonized saint.
Oldest of seven chilren born to Juan Miguel Cipitria and María Jesús Barriola. The family was weavers, and Juana learned the craft as a child. At age 18 she left home to work as a maid to a family in Burgos, Spain. Juana early felt a call to religious life, and on 8 December 1871 she founded the Congregation of the Daughters of Jesus to work for a Christian upbringing of children, and to improve the condition of women in Salamanca, Spain. She took the name Mother Candida Maria de Jesus, and the Congregation received papal approval from Pope Leo XIII on 30 July 1901. Mother Candida based her spirituality on the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola.

From Palanca Person Sharon Decant:
Do you know when the first Thanksgiving was held? Was it in 1621 at Plymouth? Or 1619 in Virginia? How about in 1565 in Florida?
Perhaps we should go even further back to when God began His creativity of the universe and placed man into it.
Man knew something or Someone was bigger than he and he was thankful for the food, the luscious rolling landscape and gardens, the majestic trees, the azure blue sky and the brilliant diamond studded stars. He knew divine forces brought about the world and all its creatures and he was thankful. It was plain common sense.
As he began planting, harvesting and living in community it became an annual festival remembering and giving thanks to the Source of all the blessings. Pagan Canaanites celebrated feast of unleavened bread to thank the gods for the harvest and offered first fruits as sacrifices of gratitude.
The Jewish people knew God was the author of nature and master of history. He acted to save His chosen people. The Israelites thanked God not only for food but more for saving them from slavery.
The night before He died Jesus celebrated this feast by offering Himself under the forms of Bread and Wine. He gave us the Eucharist as nourishment and as a perpetual reminder He offered Himself in the Supreme Sacrifice liberating us from the ancient curse of sin.
This Thanksgiving Day let us forget our differences and remember our blessings. Thank Jesus for our own personal family's salvation history. And as Cursillistes continue our daily palanca to enrich ourselves and help others.

“Rather than seeing ourselves as a body that has a soul, perhaps a better way to see us is as souls that have a body.” We are already eternal and the body is the temporary part until the resurrection. But the body is a vital part of who we are because it is the way our souls communicate to others, especially our love and care for others.
"The willingness to give should be in accord with one's means, not go beyond them. The relief of others ought not to impoverish you; there should be certain equality. Your plenty at the present time should supply their need so that their surplus may one day supply your need, with equality as a result. It is written, 'He who gathered much had no excess and he who gathered little had no lack'." 2 Corinthians 8:12-15 (This scripture is very appropriate at Thanksgiving season.)
Know What to Carry
Never put down trust, because that is something God wants you to carry; Never pick up cares, because that is something God wants you to cast away.
Cast all your care upon Him because He cares for you. Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward. 1 Peter 5:7; Hebrews 10:35 -Roy Lessen, DaySpring co-founder and writer

Dear Guests at the Lord’s Table,
If you go into a card shop, there is usually a whole section with packets of party invitations. Judging by the number of different occasions, we must like parties – there are wedding invitations, birthday invitations, retirement invitations, open house invitations, etc. They usually come 8-10 per pack; of course, we like to have lots of people at our parties. A full house is a sign of friendship, approval, belonging, celebration, etc. How disappointing for us if, for example, a party is not well attended because of inclement weather, too many other events on the same day, etc. All that work, and so few people!
So it’s not hard to identify with the disappointment and anger of the king in this weekend’s (Oct. 8-9) gospel. The excuses given by the invited guests are pretty flimsy! However, the real issue being addressed in this story is not friendship, being good subjects of the king, or graciousness in responding to an invitation. It’s about eternal life, and that’s something we can’t toy with.
Isaiah describes a mouth-watering banquet that the Lord will provide for all people: rich food, choice wine, juicy and pure. Can you picture it? It is for those who have entrusted their lives to God even in the shadow of death. God has brought them through the loneliness and darkness of death and now it is time to rejoice – forever more. They were invited and they came. The invitation had a high price tag on it. It required that they give up everything familiar: life on earth, loved ones, possessions, etc., and trust completely in God. They did, and here they are. Can you imagine the celebration as they discover that they didn’t actually lose anything or anyone in the process?
The gospel presents a different scenario. Another invitation from God, but this time those invited refuse. Do you think they had the foggiest idea what they were refusing? The king (God) tries to bridge the chasm between his love and their understanding; he re-issues the invitation. The banquet will go on, no matter what our individual responses may be.
Yet there’s that part about the wedding garment. What Jesus is trying to say is that all people are invited, bad and good alike, but sinners must repent of their sinful ways before they can come to the feast. We must have our souls “well-dressed.”
Each Sunday we are invited to a banquet even more lavish than the one Isaiah describes. Sometimes we ignore the invitation. What kind of excuses do we make for missing the banquet? Perhaps we fail to see its significance and fail to prepare ourselves. It may seem no different to us than missing a birthday party because of our busy schedules, but I invite you to think again. The king will invite others to come in our place, but I believe he will be saddened. And we will have missed out on a magnificent banquet.
I’m certainly not talking just about missing Mass; it’s also about missing out on the king’s presence in our everyday lives. The king has done all that can be expected. The response is in the hands of the guest.
Do take a moment (or longer) each day to recall an encounter with God and to be grateful.
Come to the feast! Love, Sister Edna

From Palanca Person Sharon Decant:
The Feast of the Most Holy Roasry of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated on October 7th. But, did you know there are many different Rosaries of the Catholic Church such as the Franciscan Rosary(7 decades in honor of 7 joys of Mary); Brigittine Rosary (6 decades with 63 Hail Mary’s prayed in honor of her possible 63 years of earthly life); Rosaries in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Holy Name, Holy Spirit, Angels, St Joseph, St Patrick, and other Saints, the Divine mercy Chaplet, and the Scriptural Rosary with a short Bible passage recited on each bead, and many more?
Did you know that the one we are most familiar with under went many changes before it came to us in the present day form?
In the 3rd and 4th centuries, monks would tie knots in a cord to keep track of the required daily prayers. Others would collect 300 pebbles every day in a bag and throw away each one as each prayer was finished. It was not long before the pebbles became beads on a string. Prayer beads were found in 7th century tombs.
In the 9th century Irish monks would chant all 150 psalms in their monasteries. It was so beautiful and engaging that the laity on the outside wanted to participate so they began to respond to each chant with the Our Father. It was not long before the early Church began praying the Our Father on each of the150 knotted or beaded string. .
When the Evangelization of Europe began the first part of the Hail Mary was recited in response to the psalms. St. Peter Damien in the 11th century was the first to mention this form which led to a daily recitation of 50 Hail Mary's on a knotted or beaded string.
Then some theologians in the early 13th century saw part of the psalms as veiled prophesies about the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. It was at this time many developed a great devotion to Mary. And they composed a series of 150 praises in honor of Jesus and then also of Mary, dividing them into 3 sets of 50 praises in each. St. Dominic knew this form and promoted it with great passon.in the 13th century.
All the prayer forms were combined in the 14th century, and in 15th century the modern rosary was developed with 50 Hail Mary's put into 5 groups of 10 (decades) with an Our Father before each. St. Louis deMontfort in 1700 is said to have comprised the 15 narratives into 5 Joyful, 5 Sorrowful, and 5 Glorious Mysteries, and the Rosary became a string of 50 beads prayed 3 times with each time representing one of 3 sets of mysteries. He stated that Mary is the one most conformed to Jesus. The more one is devoted to Mary, the more one is consecrated to Jesus.
Pope Pius X1 dedicated the month of October to the Rosary in the 12th century, but wasn't until the 16th century that Pope Pius V officially approved of the present day Rosary and proclaimed a Feast of the Rosary in thanksgiving for Christian war victory over invaders.
In 2002 Pope John Paul 11 introduced the Luminous Mysteries in which the basic tenet of our faith is praised, the Institution of the Eucharist.
In all of Our Blessed Mother's apparitions from the 15th century she has had a Rosary and the sweet odor of roses surround her as she repeatedly asks us to pray a daily Rosary.
The word rosary means "crown of roses". Never have I seen a rose without thorns. The Rosary is a prayer weapon against evil. It may take a thorn in our side to remind us to pray. Some say it is too repetitious. But the prayer beads are love beads. If it is true love you never get tired of telling someone you love him/her.
Francisco, one of the three Fatima children, was told he would have to pray many Rosaries before he could enter heaven. After learning of this he was never seen without a Rosary- he was always praying. He died at age of 11.
The Rosary is pleasing to God, teaching us through the various mysteries, deepens our faith, gives us grace, strength and spiritual growth. It is a soothing therapy for the mind, body and soul.
In 1980 Pope John Paul 11 said the remedy against evil is prayer. He said we must pray and ask for nothing else and put everything in the hands of the Mother of God. And be prepared to undergo great trials-to be ready to even give up our lives- a total gift of self to and for Christ. He said it is possible to alleviate problems but not to avert them. It is only in this way the Church can be renewed. We must be attentive to the prayer of the Rosary.
How many times have we heard in Cursillo we must pray and do palanca and be ready to even give up our lives to and for Christ- to renew the Church- to renew ourselves? The Rosary will help us to do this. It is Mary's will as asked by her Son. A single daily decade of the Rosary is a good beginning.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in the Lord,
September is start-up time for a lot of programs (even tho school has beaten us to it). It's also a time of normal transition because of that; and I am reflecting on the transition in my life right now, looking for the Holy Spirit in it and through it. That's a good faith response, right?
First off is my mom's getting closer and closer to passing completely into new LIFE. It's touch and go, one day up another down -- not like her illness has been pretty much all along. I thank you, each of you, for your continuing prayer; and that is a lesson in life: the touch and go that seems to be a BIG part of life for me right now and which is covered by you in prayer. THAT is tremendously consoling. My family and I have placed it all in the hands of the Lord so we're not worried about outcomes - just coping with the present. And that, too, is in the hands of the Lord (just gotta keep reminding myself -- which is a lot like life (are you totally confused yet?).
Another is the switching from working full time to "senior status" -- which is somewhat like retirement in the eyes of social security, etc., but is not actually quitting working. I was taken aback at the idea of retirement, but I can see very well now the Holy Spirit at work. I will take much needed rest, then start accepting engagements as well as I can (the Holy Spirit's in that too, I'm finding out). In prayer I have learned that one is often busier in retirement than one was in working full time, and now I know why....cuz in retirement one is doing what one likes to do and not just what one has to do. And I like to do a lot of things that a priest does.
I am not at all close to being unpacked yet, so I sincerely ask your prayers for my mental health, gift of patience with myself, good judgment on what to keep and what to give to others, what to sell and what to pitch. May take me a longer time than I want it to.... That's a life's lesson too. I'm a saver, and there's a grace in being able to trust God and let go. I'm learning that one BIG TIME; it's scary. I think it's "smart" to hold on to a lot of stuff, but I'm getting better at trusting God, and it actually feels good -- and trusted people are complimenting me for it. Confirmation and affirmation from the Lord.
Has this filled up the whole ARK yet? Let's say I'll probably be keeping you posted cuz I'll still be at life's lessons when my turn comes around again!
ULTREYA, BIG TIME, Fr. Skip

To the Cursillo community,
I would like to give a “short” summary of the National Encounter that Joan and I attended July 28 – 30 in San Antonio, Texas. We arrived at St. Mary’s University Thursday and were assigned dormitory rooms. The opening began at 7:30 PM with a blessing by Most Reverend Esuebio Elizondo, National Episcopal Advisor, opening prayer by Reverend Peter Jaramillo, National Spiritual Advisor, and welcome by Alen Becker and Jesus Castillon, Lay Directors Archdiocese of San Antonio. The keynote speaker was Roberto Goizueta, Ph.D., a Professor of Catholic Theology at Boston College. His topic was “Transformation”. His points were: How do I live out Cursillo, our willingness to witness to Christ, how to I become more authentic when I rest in Christ, God loved us first, and God opened the door for our reconciliation with His death and resurrection. The evening closed with Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament and Reconciliation.
Friday opened with prayer. The first presentation was titled “Restless Heart”, presented by Bishop Elizondo. He stressed, “My heart was restless until it rested in you, oh Lord.” We must surrender ourselves to Jesus and have a willingness to witness to the Lord. He posed these questions: How have I come to rest in the Lord? In what ways do I rest in the Lord? How can I become more authentic when I rest in the Lord? Next we had Mass with Bishop Elizondo, principle celebrant, and over 20 priests concelebrating. Very impressive. The afternoon presentation was on “Discernment”, Bishop Elizondo. He shared that discernment is choosing what is best, test everything, and retain what is good. We do what we do because we fell in love with Christ, not just our duty. We are sent to clear a path to God for all people. Our evening was filled with an Ultreya, witnesses sharing how they are living the Method. Witnesses were in both English and Spanish.
Saturday opened with prayer and devotion to Mary by Rev. Peter Jaramillo. Our morning presentation was “Evangelization Through Conversion.” This was presented in four language sessions. The speaker stressed that first we must become the Good News. Only when a Movement is living its Charism (essence & purpose) is it doing its job. She ended with the questions: How can I keep my conversion progressive? In what ways can we improve our Group Reunion and Ultreya to better aid conversion process? How can I evangelize my environment to improve conversion? The afternoon session was “Study of the Environment” (Charism of the Movement), by Michael Ciccoioppo. Michael used the word “ambiente” (people interacting). Study the person and their circumstances in their environment. There are three levels of study: self, others and environment. Following this presentation we met with members of Region 5 to share our thoughts and impressions of the Encounter. The evening was highlighted by a fiesta with professional entertainment and also skits & performances by various regions.
Obviously there was a lot to learn and absorb from all the talks, but also the one-on-one exchanges with Cursillistas from all over the world were very informative and inspirational for both of us.
Thank you to the movement for giving us this great opportunity.
Yours in Christ, Bernie & Joan Rumschlag

This men's team has met faithfully to prepare for this weekend. As of this ARK publication, it is doubtful that the weekend will proceed because of lack of candidates. We thank them for their preparation and hope that they will be able to serve when the weekend does happen. We also ask the Fourth Day community to pray for the team and for the rejuvenation of the Cursillo Movement in our diocese.
School of Leaders:
We meet monthly on the third Saturday, in St. Michael’s, Findlay, in the Teacher’s Lounge. Our next one is Saturday September 17, 2011, from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
A lay person will give us an overview of the Essence of the Cursillo Movement, and then what there is about this movement, that calls us to share the fundamentals of being a Christian. The methods we can use to develop a core group, to go more deeply into our personal vocations, and the will to use them. Ref: “The Fundamental Ideals of the Cursillo Movement”, Ch. 2.
The Spiritual Advisor’s presentation for September will be by a Lay Minister. The focus is on a Partnership in Evangelization: Family, World, and Parish. How God discloses life’s meaning, manifested in the love that family members share with each other, that forms the basis for a wider involvement in the parish, and the world. And lest we begin to think that it’s too broad an issue, there are practical steps to accomplish it.
In August we had 13 people. Come share in the good discussions and prayers. The coffee/tea pot is on. The tables are ready. See you there.

From Secretariat Palanca Person Sharon Decant:
It is so very hard to believe we are now in September. We have the first day of Autumn on the 23rd, the International Day of Peace on the 21st, Labor Day on the 5th, and no one will ever forget the infamous Day of Remembrances, also named Patriots Day, on the 11th. Even if we tried the news agencies will not let us nor should we ever forget.
We also should not forget that we have religious remembrances as well. The Nativity of Mary on the 8th, Exaltation of the Cross on the 14th, St. Matthew on the 21st, St Michael the Archangel, on the 23rd, and what was once called Michaelmas Day on the 29th.
The lazy and hazy days have mostly been vanquished and the hot and humid weather is replaced by reality. Summer is almost gone. Most schools and Congress, supposedly, are back in session. Where has the time gone?
As the last vestige of summer slip by I strolled through my daughter's garden where the sweet smell of her roses permeated the air amid the many other flowery blossoms and I cannot forget to mention one of my favorites, the tulip-shaped Forget-Me -Nots, one of the flowers of September. It is a small, beautiful and unpretentious flower. A German legend has it that when God named all the plants, one tiny unnamed one cried out, "Lord, Forget- me-not". His answer was, "That shall be your name". It became the symbol of faithfulness and enduring love. Newfoundland once used it as a symbol of its nation's war dead. And Longfellow wrote about it calling it the flower of the angels.
September was once called the harvest month. The name September is derived from the Latin word "septem" which means "seven”. In the old Roman calendar it was the seventh month.
The number seven is the most sacred number to the Jewish people. It is used over 735 times in the Bible. There are 7 deadly sins; the Sabbath is the 7th day of the week, God having created the earth in six days, resting on the 7th; 7 years of Satan's reign; 7 days after Noah entered the Ark the floods came; it took 7 years for Solomon to build the temple: Jesus spoke 7 Words from the Cross; there are 7 Beatitudes; 7 Sacraments; we are to forgive one another 70 times or 70 times seven (a multiple of 7). These are only a few of instances where the number seven is used in the Bible. In addition there are 7 bones in the neck, face, ankle, hole in the head; changes take place in the body every 7 years; 7 notes in a musical scale, 7 colors in the rainbow; most births are multiple of 7; human conception to birth usually takes 280 days; many times the most critical days of sickness is 7, 14, or 21. God formed almost everything in a pattern of 7 Look at a snowflake or frost on a window. The whole Word of God is founded upon the number 7, which is Spiritual Perfection, Completeness, and Finished. It is done.
What is not done is our work on earth. Our nation was founded on Christian principles with tolerance toward those who are not Christians. Mother Theresa of Calcutta is a modern example of how to act in a non-Christian environment. She will never be forgotten in India and her work continues. When Mother Theresa was in the United States many years ago I saw her on television on a talk show where she was interviewed through an interpreter. Just before she arrived on stage there was a scantily dressed starlet on stage talking with the host. The moment Mother Theresa came on stage the starlet asked for a jacket to cover herself . She was embarrassed into doing the right thing even though no one said anything to her. About a year later the starlet again appeared on a talk show where she revisited the time she was on stage with Mother Theresa. That one time prompted her to begin a shelter for the homeless. She said she was changed and never again wore such clothing. How we act and dress affects others.
We cannot let God be taken out of any of our environments, and must do what we can to bring God back into the political environments as well.
Where has the time gone when there can be no religious leaders leading prayer at a 9-11-Remembrance Day? When there can be no mention of God at a funeral of a soldier in a government cemetery in Texas? When a school in New York allows Muslim children to go to a designated area in the school to pray during the school day but Christian prayer in schools or even a moment set aside for silent prayer is forbidden? When Catholics sit home or do other activities instead of attending Sunday Mass? When children are not taught about God and prayer time at home is obsolete? When as an adult you cannot verbally admonish a child performing a bad habit such as cursing, swearing or other filth coming from his or her mouth? When you are excoriated for trying to perform an act of kindness?
Our environments are badly in need of harvesting. The reality is time is passing by quickly. Employ metanoia first to oneself and then make a friend, be a friend and bring a friend to Christ is the only way to spiritual perfection. Christianity is the only explanation that makes sense of human life. The absence of Christian principles creates chaos.
Sincere prayer, sacrifice, and acts of mercy are the means in which Spiritual Perfection is achieved. It is through palanca that the faithfulness and enduring love of God shine through. Forget-Me-Not, dear Lord, I have tried to be your faithful servant.
Jesus wants all of us to change our environments. We all have different environments. Some have lost their way and are incarcerated. They are badly in need of prayers. The Milan Michigan USA prison retreat is September 15-18. It is a Cursillo-based 3 day program. Please let these inmates know you are praying for them. You do not know how these men relish a note telling them they are being prayed for. Remember, Jesus also came for His Lost Sheep. They are the Forget-Me Nots. You can e-mail such written prayers to sharondecant@sbcglobal.net. DeColores!

The following came from Gus Miller, our “retired” lay director and he has what I think is a great idea:
In my recent time serving as lay director, I wrote a few thoughts and ideas almost monthly to share with our 4th day people and I've been thinking of a way for all of us to share our A-HA moments when we experience a close moment or an insight that touches our hearts. Perhaps some space in the Ark could be dedicated to these Words of Wisdom or “WOW” moments. If you should devote a column to this endeavor, perhaps another title could be "Nuggets to Share."
I voted for WOW……Words of Wisdom….and so that is what this new feature in the Ark will be called. Send me your “A-HA” moments or quotes, sayings, or Bible verses you’d like to share. This month I include some of Gus’s contributions, found in the July issue of Guideposts Magazine:
"Patience is a virtue that carries a lot of 'wait.' " (by Louise Mefferd of Van Wert, Ohio)
"When facing a difficult task, act as though it is impossible to fail. If you are going after Moby Dick, take along the tartar sauce." (Joel Huffer of Hagerstown, Maryland)
"You don't have a soul, you are a soul. You have a body." (C. S. Lewis)
WOW, don’t you feel just a little wiser??!

In place of a Spiritual Director’s greeting this month, Sr. Edna shares with us this personal witness by Bishop John McCormack of a Cursillo experience published in Parable, the Magazine of the Diocese of Manchester in New Hampshire.
Don’t Wait Too Long for a Renewal
Have you ever felt like opportunities have passed you by? Like maybe your best days are behind you? Or like you are just too old and too set in your ways to take on a new challenge such as going back to school, changing jobs, learning a new hobby, or entering a new relationship? Well, as I celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of my ordination this past year, I thought I could qualify as someone who was, as we like to say here in New England, “all set.” At my young age, I did not really anticipate encountering anything brand new. Well, I have news for you. Very good news: God is never finished with any of us.
For years, many of my priest and lay friends, as well as a fellow bishop whom I admire, have encouraged me to experience a Cursillo, but I have always had plenty of excuses. Taking three-and-a-half days out of my busy calendar was reason enough to postpone this invitation indefinitely. Yet I have always been impressed with the people in the parishes who were members of the Cursillo movement. They were often leaders in their parishes and they always struck me as people who genuinely wanted to help, not out of a self-centered need to be recognized, but out of a real desire to serve others. This made an impression on me. But still, three whole days dedicated to spiritual instruction and renewal? I am a bishop, after all. I pray daily, teach about Christ’s saving grace frequently, and make private retreats annually. I should be all set, right?
Well, leading up to my 75th birthday, I gave myself, or rather God gave to me, a remarkable gift. I finally made a Cursillo. It was for me, as it is for hundreds of men and women each year, a transformative and rejuvenating spiritual experience!
Imagine the awkwardness when I first walked into the room on the inaugural Thursday evening of the Cursillo. I didn’t know anyone in the room. Needless to say, they all recognized me and were no doubt wondering to themselves, “What is the Bishop doing here?” Eventually, once we overcame the initial superficial barriers, they came to see me and treat me as “one of the guys,” which I really appreciated. Begun among Catholics in Spain in the 1940s, Cursillo is a movement whose full name is Cursillo de Cristiandad or “Short courses of Christianity.” The three-day weekend is at the core of the movement. Individuals make this among other men, and then after they have done so, their spouses are invited to do the same among women.
At the essence of Cursillo is the recognition that “while most people would like to live their lives in a Christ-like manner, the pressures of the world often make this difficult.” The movement offers “a method and a technique to provide each of us with the tools, the mentality, the strength, and the support” to walk in Christ.
So there we all were, men of different ages and backgrounds from all walks of life: CEO’s, salesmen, teachers, lawyers, skilled laborers, husbands, fathers, single men, and one bishop. All of us were filled with nervous expectations, a bit of hope, and an instinctive desire to turn around and leave in a hurry. What we shared in common with each other was the simple desire to know our faith and the Lord better and to live with a better understanding of the Lord’s ways. And so we stayed.
We not only stayed, we participated together in what was for me a transformative three days that brought us each from complacency to consciousness of Christ’s love for us, animating in turn our desire to love Christ. What was especially moving to me was the faith of the other men present. As men courageously and openly spoke about their relationship with the Lord and what that means in their lives, it affected me deeply and affected all of us. We experienced the power of the Lord in our midst.
Truthfully, I never expected to be animated by this experience in the way that I was. At 74 years old I did not think I had perfected the art of Christian living, but neither did I recognize just how much growth and change was possible. I am embarrassed to admit it, but I had underestimated the power of God’s love to keep shaping our daily lives through challenges, sacrifice, surprises, suffering, and the love of others. Our own perspectives and expectations may become limited, but Christ’s love for us is not. It is not only abundant, it is infinite. How apparent this is in the pages of this issue of Parable. When I look at the remarkable and inspiring art that Sylvia Nicolas creates even in her eighth decade of living; when I read of how the film makers of Either/Or Films came to enter the Church well into their life’s journey; when I see the love and comfort that Sheryl Brooks brings to the elderly; and when I consider my own experience on Cursillo, it is more clear to me than ever that God is never finished loving, shaping, and renewing our lives. I therefore encourage all of you to be open to renewal. Don’t wait as long as I did to make a Cursillo, or a Marriage Encounter, or to go on a religious pilgrimage or to reconcile with those from whom you are estranged. Take it from this youngster in the faith: if you find a way to creatively disrupt the comfort and complacency of your routines and relationships, the Holy Spirit will surprise you and animate your lives with a love that is creative and infinite.

Meeting on July 31, 2011 was held in Fostoria at St Wendelin this month and will be there on August 28, 2011. Twelve members were present. Discussed palancas, decided we need more people for Rollos!! We assigned 3 rollos: Piedad-Mike Fonseca, Accion-Domino Ortega, Ideal-Juan Duran, we decided to put the rest in a bowl and have team members draw one out! We are hoping to have an opening Men's Cursillo in Sept. or Oct. of 2012. We also are going to study the Cursillo book on the subject of the first night, which should be silent to not to give away what is going to happen, those pages are 20-29. A question came up about if a married woman can live her Cursillo before her husband. She must have received all sacraments and be an active Catholic. We closed with prayer and petitions and song. Our meetings are the last Sunday of every month!! We welcome any Cursillistas to come, must be willing to commit to join our team men or women!!! DE COLORES!!!!!! Mary Frances Ortega

August 15th is the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, Our Blessed Mother. It is a day we honor her with a special Mass, processions, songs, rosaries, and other prayers. On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII declared as infallible the Assumption of Mary to be a dogma of Catholic Faith. She was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory when her earthly life was over and crowned by Jesus, Our Lord, as Queen over all things in heaven and on earth. As this special day approaches here are some interesting facts and mysteries.
There is nothing known for certain the day, year, or even how she died. There are many dates associated with her death, January 1 and 18th, February 20, August 23rd through August 30th, September 13th, and November 19th to name only a few. The years vary between 3 and 15 years after Jesus' Resurrection.
The place is claimed by two cities, Jerusalem and Ephesus. There is veneration at a "Tomb of Mary" close to Mount Zion where early Christian Communities lived. However, there is no record that anyone knew of the "Tomb of Mary" during the first 6 centuries On the hill itself is a "Place of Dormition" where many believe is the spot of Mary's "fallen asleep" - where she died.
But it should be remembered that Jerusalem was destroyed the second time in 70AD about 40 years or less after Jesus died. For 200 years every memory of Jesus was obliterated from the city and the sacred sites became pagan temples until Emperor Constantine (235-337) restored Jerusalem as a sacred city.
Some questioned the sermons given on the bodily assumption of Mary by St. Andrew, St. Gregory, St. Jerome, St. Augustine, and St. John Damascene who believed her body after her death was duly buried but did not remain in the state of death nor decay.
It is reported that at the Council of Chalcedon in 451 the Emperor Marican asked St. Juvenal, the Patriarch of Jerusalem to bring relics of Mary to Constantinople to be enshrined in the Capitol. St Juvenal told the Emperor that Mary died in the presence of all the Apostles but when St Thomas requested that her tomb be opened, it was empty. The Apostles all believed her human body was taken up to heaven.
The Assumption of Mary completes God's work in her since it is not fitting that the flesh that had given life to Jesus, God Himself, should ever undergo corruption. The Ascension of Our Lord and the Assumption of Our Lady gives us hope that we too will follow them when our lives are ended.
Mary was the first disciple of Jesus. She was called and she answered just as we are called to do His work in Cursillo. Just as Mary's experiences of Our Lord’s Presence are extended to all, we too are to share our experiences of God's Presence to everyone in our environments.
Mary is the strong hand in Cursillo. Our praise and veneration of Mary is meant to draw us to a deeper relationship with Jesus. Jesus was a helpless Child dependent on Mary for the development of His body, mind, and soul. Cursillo supplies us with our physical and spiritual development.
Simeon told Mary that "A sword shall pierce your heart and even your own soul". Her Son hung on a cross before her eyes---She was helpless. His wounds bled-----She could not stop the bleeding. His mouth was parched----she could not give Him water. His body ached from scourging, the nails and the thorns---she could not soothe the pain The taunts that were flung at Him and dying the death of a criminal-----------wounded her. When He said "Woman, behold your son”----a sword cut deep into her heart. Her Mother-Son earthly relationship with Jesus was being terminated. John was to be her earthly son.
We can look to Mary when our own many wounds try to inhibit our Christianity. Mary accepted John as her son, relinquishing her earthly Flesh and Blood to the Kingdom. Our number one priority in life is to bring as many people as possible to Christ by living the Christian life ourselves and use palanca to cut deep into the hearts of those we encounter. DeColores!
To all of our fourth day people, dear friends one and all,
I want to thank you for your ongoing support of our beloved Cursillo movement and for me as I attempted to lead our secretariat these last couple of years. It is time for younger, more energetic, and highly dedicated people to lead the way. I have received many blessings during my years of service; I have felt very strongly the presence of the Holy Spirit in every occasion when I was leading meetings these last two years, I have been blessed with a great bunch of people serving with me on Secretariat and without whom little would have been accomplished. Four biggies were the revision of the cursillo weekend manuals, the revision of the Secretariat job descriptions, the rewriting of the diocesan cursillo bylaws, and just being finished now, the writing a current Pastoral Plan.
I beg of all of you your continuing prayers, palanca, and support for Bernie Rumschlag and all the members of secretariat serving with him. I want to thank all those I have worked with through the years, especially Margaret Boltz, who worked so hard, leading us so well for at least five years. George and Carol Miller did a great job in the Pre-Cursillo position; their commitment ended a month ago on July 1. Nancy Kimmet also finished her term on July 1; she has done a great job also, leading us in Leaders School most recently. In the past year several have given up their positions. Kathy Huffman has given up her job as Palanca Chairperson last year; we thank her for all of her years of efforts also. Sharon DeCant has replaced Kathy. Pat Ermi asked to be relieved of her duty of Cursillo chairman about a year ago and Dale Fair took over then. Thanks for your efforts, Pat. Also Pat Miller passed her job of doing the Ark on to Jane Distel. Pat fought many battles with our old computer, working very hard to keep the Ark being printed; thanks Pat. Alfredo Diaz who served so well in the Spiritual Advisors group also retired in the past year. They all deserve our deep appreciation for all their efforts. Mary Ann Hohman will be replacing George and Carol as precursillo chairperson and Marty Charney is taking over for Nancy in the SOL position.
Those not retiring but continuing to serve are Bernie Rumschlag, who served as my faithful assistant and who after attending the National Cursillo encounter last month, is ready, willing and able to take over the job of diocesan lay director. When Dale Fair retired from his day job he began doing the work of the "Cursillo" position. Dale is doing a wonderful job in his position, and currently is heading the Pastoral Plan Revision committee as well. Howie and Ruth Ann Stultz hold the "Post Cursillo" position and are doing a very good job for us there. Betty Obringer joined us in Secretariat last summer and uses her dedication as "Treasurer". Bill Obringer has been on secretariat somewhat longer than Betty and he has been doing a very conscientious job in the “Facilities" position. Marty Charney has been assisting Nancy Kimmet in the "School of Leaders" position for a year and is now assuming that position. Jane Distel joined secretariat last year as "Communications" person and has been doing a superb job taking notes and reporting the minutes of our meetings as well as publishing the Ark. Sharon DeCant has taken over the position of "Palanca" chairperson and has been doing a great job for us there. Sister Edna, Father Ed Littelman, and Father Jim Brown serving as Spiritual Advisors have all been very highly motivated, all tirelessly serving many years, all dedicated to the Cursillo movement. These three have all been a huge blessing to our diocesan movement.
There are two others not on secretariat who also contribute a great deal to our movement. Barb Grycza has been administering the prayer vine for some years and she spends a lot of time with calls for prayers coming in all the time. Carol Miller has been struggling with the cursillo website for some time; they recently changed to a faster internet server and she is now able to manage the website reasonably well again. Carol has volunteered to stay on as webmaster and we very much appreciate Carol and Barbs' services to our 4th day people.
I hope that I have mentioned everyone’s name that is on my gratitude list; if I've missed anyone, it was inadvertent and I apologize for that. I believe that we owe these people a big thank you and it would be nice to thank them personally when we encounter them in our activities.
There is one more thing I would like you to consider. In this issue of the ARK, for your information, we are including a report of the Cursillo finances for the past year. It really opened my eyes and probably will yours as well to see how much money goes through our system. Our expenditures last year exceeded our income by nearly $2,800. We are trying to be good stewards of our resources, but we need your help also. One area to address is the short fall of income from team members which came to $740 in that year. We want everyone to take the cost to the Pines of $135 per person very seriously as that price falls somewhat short of our total weekend cost which includes bibles, prayer books and other supplies. We have operated at this price for several years and are doing our best to hold that line. Several years ago we received a nice bequest from the estate of Helen and Jack Springer, which gives us a measure of security now but which won't last much longer.
By the way Cursillo is a 401C3 organization which is a tax exempt status. Donations are tax free. We would like all cursillistas to consider contributing to the Cursillo movement so that we may continue to provide the best possible benefits to our operation. Perhaps a regular monthly check as part of your tithing program. Checks can be sent to Betty Obringer at any time. We do recognize that not everyone has resources to give, but we also know that many cursillistas are quite well off and can afford to be generous. This is something that we can all pray on; God does move people’s hearts. I have developed a strong conviction that God wants us to share all our personal resources, our talents, our time, and our money as well. I think that we all remember the question asked at the conclusion of the Ideals talk. Where do you spend your time, your talents, and your money? The answer to this question tells where your heart is.
As always, I ask for your participation in Cursillo events and activities, your everyday prayers and whatever financial support you can afford. Gods' blessings are great to a generous heart. It has been a pleasure serving you and I call Gods' down blessings on everyone.
I am not going away; I will be seeing you wherever Cursillistas are gathered. De Colores, Your brother, Gus Miller

To my Sisters and Brothers in the Lord,
Maybe this message is right on time for some of you and hopefully not too late for any of you. I remember in my early days of priesthood trying to work during the summer to get all kinds of things ready for the beginning of the school/program year in September. Thought I could save a lot of trouble by planning ahead. Well, what I kept finding out was that I got to September and things started up again, and I was dead tired. I eventually figured out what was wrong. I was missing the message of the Lord that just like Sunday (the Lord's Day) is meant to be a day of rest each week, so is summer meant to be the opportunity for some re-creation.
That can be through recreation or vacation ("getting away") or playing instead of working all the time, or just more focused resting -- whatever the Spirit calls you to. But it is important to make the effort to use the nature-time God gives us to keep a balance in our lives for spiritual health. We should be doing this all year long, of course, on the Lord's day (and I suspect there are many of us who need to take stock of ourselves in this regard) so that we're really good at it by summer. We can praise God all the more!
So how about helping one another make sure we get some "re-creation" time in by doing it together or reminding one another of the good times each of us has had doing just this or whatever cunning way we can let the Holy Spirit use us. And not just this summer, but every summer -- and every Sunday. Doing so will actually accomplish the purpose and method of Cursillo while we're having fun. God is really smart, no?

From Secretariat Palanca Person Sharon Decant:
Independence Day was a fun day with good food, swimming, games and conversations with family and friends topped off with fireworks in the evening. If it were not for a Mass in the morning and a beautiful ceremony at the cemetery, there was not one mention of the reason for the celebration. What has happened to us?
Looking at history, almost all the signers of the Declaration died broke, were wanted as traitors to their former homeland, some were hanged, their families broken apart, land taken from them and all persecuted because of their belief in what was called the "New Experiment," founded on Christian principles.
Jesus was wanted as a traitor, hung with nails embedded in His hands and Feet, His Apostles and Disciples broken apart with many turning against Him, He was cruelly persecuted to give us Independence from sin, Freedom from the horrors of sin.
What has happened to us? What are we willing to give up for Freedom? What are we willing to do to proclaim Christianity? To freely proclaim the Christian principles we are to live by?
Today, more than ever before, it is absolutely necessary to remember that we would not have our beautiful country had it not been for our Founding Fathers' belief in Christian principles achieved through prayer and great sacrifice. It is written in all 50 of our States' Constitutions that God is indispensable.
It is absolutely necessary to proclaim Christianity in today’s environments. Our Founding Fathers knew that without prayer, without God we are nothing, we are worth nothing, and can do nothing.
Cursillo brings Christianity back into our environments, making our country rich with citizens of this world glorifying the Supreme Sacrifice that Jesus Himself made in giving us Freedom from sin. But this change in environments cannot be done without sacrifice, prayer, and works of mercy to achieve that goal. This is palanca. And it must be done unceasingly.

The beautiful prayer below was sent by Sr. Edna after attending a recent convocation and hearing the prayer there. As Sister shared, perhaps you can meditate on the words “or use it with a loved one who is feeling the effects of aging”. Thank you, Sister Edna.
