From Pre-Cursillo Couple:
Time to send candidate applications to the Pre Cursillo Couple, George & Carol Miller at 4160 County Road 13, Kansas, OH 44841 for both the Men and Women Spring Cursillos. Deadline for applications for the men (& if married, send the wife’s application at the same time) is March 4th.  Please remember a sponsor application is to be included with each candidate application. It would also be a big help if the candidate would “print” when filling out their application.   E-mail address needs to be especially printed and readable. Thanks.

ATTENTION SPONSORS:

1) Policy on Couples Living a Cursillo Weekend

  1. It is the long-standing policy of Cursillo that married couples enter the Cursillo movement together, although on separate weekends.  Sponsors who meet either the husband or wife through employment or other interaction also assume the responsibility to meet the spouse, so that “making a friend” includes both the husband and the wife.
  2. If both the husband and wife are Catholics who are able to receive the sacraments, both fill out applications for Cursillo at the same time.  Once both applications have been processed by the diocesan pre-Cursillo, it does not matter who attends first.
  3. If one of the spouses is not Catholic or is unable to receive the sacraments, he/she is to be told about Via de Cristo, Emmaus, Kairos, or other experience similar to Cursillo, and be encouraged to attend.
  4. If one of the spouses is initially reluctant or unwilling to live a Cursillo weekend, but the other spouse wants to do so, the sponsor patiently continues to “make a friend,” and “be a friend” to both, with hopes of obtaining the willingness of both to participate.
  5. When it becomes apparent that one spouse will not agree to live a weekend, after “d” above has been tried unsuccessfully, the sponsor refers the situation to the diocesan pre-Cursillo person, who in turn contacts one of the spiritual advisors of the Cursillo movement.  The spiritual advisor arranges for a face-to-face visit with the couple and the sponsor(s) to: 1) fully explain the Cursillo movement, including the weekend and the follow-up program of reunion and Ultreya; and 2) ascertain whether one’s participation in the movement will endanger, weaken or harm the couple’s marriage. If there is sufficient reason to believe this, the husband and wife will both be discouraged from attending.  If not, the application for one will be filled out, received and processed, with the notation and signature of the interviewing spiritual advisor.

2) Policy on Receiving Applications for a Cursillo Weekend

Applications must be received by the diocesan pre-Cursillo person/couple no later than two Thursdays prior to the Thursday on which the Cursillo weekend opens. Any Applications received after that day will automatically be held for the next set of weekends.

            Rationale

  • We are not primarily focused on filling up weekends. Our goal is to study environments    and to cultivate friendships; i.e., to “make a friend, be a friend, bring that friend to Christ.”
  • “Eleventh hour” scurrying around getting candidates does not allow the fourth day community time to offer palanca for that candidate; at times they are not even aware of    the person coming.
  • Securing candidates less than two weeks before a weekend often signals a lack of preparation of those candidates by sponsors.

From the secretariat; A message from the School of Leaders; by July 1st two positions in the Diocesan Cursillo movement will need to be filled.

PALANCA CHAIRPERSON: Kathy Huffman has been our Palanca chairperson for some time, she needs for someone in the Cursillo community to consider to take over for her. Her duties are to notify the national Cursillo office of upcoming Cursillo weekends or Cursillo workshops in the Toledo Diocese and request palanca. Keep the Diocesan Fourth day community aware of the need to offer palanca for the continual growth of the Movement, for Cursillo weekends and workshops in other diocese in the U.S.  and around the world. Having requested and having assured that the Fourth Day community is offering palanca, she notified other dioceses of our prayers and palanca. [these are the duties of Palanca position]. This is a prayerful position and communication is a very important part of it. Kathy will give anyone willing to take over as palanca chairperson help in getting started so as to continue her good work.

COMMUNICATION CHAIRPERSON: will keep the minutes of all meetings and see to it that they are distributed promptly to all who should receive them. The Diocesan Communication Chairperson will oversee the website and the ARK, and insure that mailing and e-mailing lists are up to date. The Chairperson will perform other duties usually connected with this position.(Sr. Edna has been doing the minutes for Secretariat on her laptop, a big help to us and she gets the minutes out quickly). Pat Miller does the ARK and Carol Miller publishes the website. If anyone is interested and needs more information, there is a paper on the complete duties for each position. I can send anyone who would like more information on either of the positions. Contact me at nanc_herm58@sbcglobal.net. (note the underscore between nanc_herm) May God give you the insight and strength to pray on this and be willing to consider such a ministry.

Our witness for this Month is from Mike Ruhlen.  Keep in mind that this was written Dec. 31, 2009

Many of you know about our grandson Nehemiah or Lil Nemo as he has come to be known. I want to share with all of you again in case someone out there needs a story of hope, prayer, friendship and our walk with Jesus.

Back in May we found out our daughter Stephanie found out she was pregnant and of course we as parents were devastated. But when she went to her first doctor’s appointment, she was told that the baby had so many medical issues that he would most likely not survive the pregnancy. The nurse looked her square in the eye and said you might want to consider "terminating the pregnancy." Judy was with her as my daughter looked at her and said you mean kill this child? I don't think I can do that.  When she came home it was a lot of tears from everyone.

The devastation turned to the start of the "why us?" type questions. I remembered something Joanie Erd said in a witness. Why not us? We are no more special than anyone else. She went to the next appointment and it was a little more of the same.  If the baby survives the delivery we would make him comfortable until he dies. He would not be compatible with life. What the heck does that mean anyway?

At this point several things happened. One, Steph named the baby Nehemiah which means "comforted by God" and that was followed by his nick name Nemo. She would sit and rub her tummy and say "just keep swimming, just keep swimming." Which you would probably have to watch the movie to understand. I had to.

The next thing that happened was Judy and I decided that we were going to show this baby as much love as we could for as long as we had it. We then talked to our Groupies.  Our best friends that we group with and asked with tears in our eyes to pray for this little guy. I took Steph to the Pines and sat in the Chapel with her.  Steph hadn't been going to church for a while now but this was great.  She sat for about a half an hour and then I laid my hand on her tummy. I prayed over this little guy like I hadn't prayed before. When I was done my hand was warm and she told me her tummy was sweaty. I feel the Holy Spirit came down upon us that day because things started to change.  As our friends prayed and our Cursillo family passed the word and they prayed, things started to improve.

Her next appointment she was told that this little guy was going to survive and live to be an adult. He probably won't walk because of the spina bifada and may have some brain issues but he will live. Our eyes lit up and all of our Cursillo family would call or write or ask how he was doing and they would say we are still praying. When Nemo was born, he was whisked away and we didn't get to see him for another 5 hours. That was hard as we didn't know how he was. We finally got to see him from a distance and he was so cute and doing ok. The next day that had him into surgery to fix the hole in his back. He has a 4 inch incision on his back. 2 days later he had another surgery to put in a shunt to reduce the fluid around the brain. And things started happening pretty quick after that. He started becoming alert and we got to hold him, and then we got to take him home. That was the best day ever. But it wasn't over yet. He went to the Neurosurgeon and while he was examining him he lifted his legs. The surgeon took a step back and said "he moved his legs, he wasn't supposed to be able to do that." Two days later he went to the Orthosurgeon and he examined him and looked at Steph and said "by golly this little one just might walk." It was the best day ever. (yes but you better get used to hearing it)

Now the next hurdle. Nemo still had a heart problem that needed taken care of. A flap in the lower chamber needed repaired as well as one of the arteries. He was getting worse and was supposed to have surgery in January but couldn't wait. Judy and I took him with us to group and when everyone had held him and loved him, we took him in the living room, gathered around him and prayed over him. (wow, I highly recommend this) We took him to the University of Michigan and they admitted him right away. Surgery was to be the next day. They took him in and updated us every half an hour for four hours and then the tech came out and her face had changed. She said they were trying to take him off the heart lung machine and every time they did his heart would start to fail. The surgeon was going back in to see what was happening. This was the longest hour of our life. But she finally came out and said he found the issue and fixed it and Nemo is doing very well. BEST DAY EVER! So many things have happened along the way to show us that Jesus was with us. Some day I will share those stories as well. When I finally got to hold him yesterday, I looked at the name of the baby next to him which was on a big sign and it was Jesus. Obviously it is pronounced differently but I feel it was God's way of saying "why were you so worried, my son was beside him the whole time." Today I started praying for that little guy and if you could help I would appreciate it. It is pronounced Heysus.

Judy and I would like to thank our Groupies. our Cursillo family, and all of those who have called and prayed and offered support. Without it this could have ended differently. I now ask the same question but in a different reference.  “Why us?”  So many people have lost their little ones and our hearts go out to them. Today we are waiting for our daughter to call and say they are coming home.  It is the best day ever.
God Bless you all.
Mike and Judy Ruhlen

**PS. I'm sure there have been many more miracles  since this witness was written. Pat M.  OUR GOD IS AN AWESOME GOD.

Our Spiritual Advisors, Fr. Ed Littelmann, Fr. Jim Brown and Sr. Edna Michel have been serving as Spiritual Advisors on our Regional Secretariat for many years.
They have not only been guiding us here in Toledo Diocese, but also many  Cursillistas from Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.  We are English, Spanish and Vietnamese speaking Cursillistas.  HOWEVER,     HERE IS THE NEWS:  THEY HAVE ALL RETIRED FROM THIS POSITION.

I MENTION THIS BECAUSE THEY HAVE ALL WORKED VERY HARD TO KEEP UP THOSE RESPONSIBILITIES AS WELL AS THE ONES THAT THEY HAVE HERE AT HOME.  YOU COULD ALWAYS DEPEND ON THEM TO BE THERE AT OUR MEETINGS AND FEED US WELL SPIRITUALLY.  Would you CONSIDER DROPPING THEM  A LINE OF THANKSGIVING AND LOVE FOR ALL THEY DO FOR GOD'S PEOPLES??????

When I asked for witnesses for the Ark last month, I was so pleased to receive 5.. yes, 5.  Here is the first one.  Enjoy the love of God present in her words.

My life was shattered 1½ years ago when Jim died. I couldn’t imagine being left alone – raising my kids and just managing life. So many prayed and yet Jim was not healed. Only God knows the answer to “why?”  In working through my grief, I heard the question, “Is this going to make you bitter or better?” I choose better.  Being bitter would hurt God, me and my family. As I continue to work through my grief, I hope in the Lord. Only He can give me the strength that I need day to  day. I
haven’t been left alone. Jesus has been at my side every step of the way. He comes to me with comfort and direction when I read the Bible and pray. He comes to me through the many, many people who have helped me these past months. What an awesome experience it has been to see God provide through his servants. Someone once said to me, “That really says a lot about you that so many people have stepped up to help you.” My response was, “No, I think it speaks more of how all these people are living out their faith.” Jim often said, “Life is good.” And of course, he was right. I have so much to be thankful for even now. Yet some days are very difficult. For years I’ve tried to live each day with a spirit of gratitude for the people and things in my life. I believe this has made a difference day-to-day and facing Jim’s death. We are always better off living in the moment, really being present with the people in our lives. This quote I recently heard speaks to me. “Peace is not the absence of trouble. It is the presence of God.” My children are 12 to 19. For one week this summer I will have five teenagers! We have trouble at our house sometimes. We are all grieving and this exposes and amplifies our good and bad qualities. We all have our rough edges. Thankfully, I love being around teenagers (most of the time). I am challenged by them daily to grow emotionally and spiritually. I will leave you with a Bible verse that I’ve been carrying around with me: “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”   II Cor 4:8-9

Jeanine Van Der Laar

Thanks to all of you that sent Witnesses. I certainly will use one of them each month for the ARK.

The wondrous and joyous season of Christmas is passed and now we settle into the “routine” of ordinary time of the liturgical year.

The term "Ordinary Time" may be misleading. In the context of the liturgical year the term "ordinary" does not mean "usual or average or routine." Ordinary here means "not seasonal." Ordinary Time is that part of the Liturgical Year that lies outside the seasons of Lent-Easter and Advent-Christmas. In Ordinary Time, the Church celebrates the mystery of Christ not in one specific aspect but in all its aspects. The readings during the liturgies of Ordinary Time help to instruct us on how to live out our Christian faith in our daily lives.

Ordinary Time in the Church's year occurs in two sections. The first part begins on the Monday following the Christmas season, which ends with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord on the Sunday following January 6. It lasts through the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten season. Ordinary Time resumes after the Easter Season, on the Monday after Pentecost, and continues until evening prayer on the Saturday before the First Sunday of Advent. The feast of Christ the King is the last Sunday of Ordinary Time and of the liturgical year.

The liturgical color for Ordinary Time is green, a sign of hope. And, the symbol for Ordinary Time is the Chi Rho. The Chi Rho is a Christian symbol that dates from the early Church. It is comprised of the first two letters of the Greek word for Messiah, Christos—the letter Chi looks like the letter "X", and the letter Rho looks like the letter "P." This abbreviation became a symbol representing Jesus Christ.

What does this mean to Cursillistas? To begin, this is our cycle of liturgical celebration as Christians and is a very special time for us to reflect on the mystery of the life of Christ. Ordinary time, in a kind of a way, reminds us that the Cursillo weekend is a joyous and wondrous moment to experience; it is special and life changing. Also, by “working” a Cursillo, we have the privilege and joy of re-experiencing the weekend. But the most import time is living out the fourth day, our ordinary time. It is here that we reflect on the mystery of Christ in our lives and contemplate how this life in Christ is being lived on a daily basis; it is a time on how our faith is continuing to mature. It is also a time in which we continue to witness this faith to others by making friends and bringing them to greater knowledge of Jesus.

Ordinary time or the forth day is about seeking a deeper, more profound relationship with the Lord in the ordinary experiences of life.

Deacon Alfredo M. Díaz

A little spiritual NOTE from Gus and Pat...

Junipero Serra, the founder of the Missions, which were the first settlements of civilized man in California was born on the island of Majorca part of  the kingdom of Spain, in 1713. ( Majorca is where the First Cursillo was experienced.)  He became a Monk of the order of St. Francis, and the new name Junipero replaced his baptismal name, Miguel Jose'  He died at the age of 71.  Palou, a brother Franciscan Monk,  also a native of Majorca, wrote Junipero's biography.  This is one of the stories Palou recorded with unquestioning faith.

When Serra was was traveling with a party of missionaries through the province of Huasteca (In Mexico) many of the villagers did not go to hear the word of God at the first village where they stopped; but scarcely had the fathers left the place when it was visited by an epidemic, which carried away sixty villagers, all of whom, as the clergy of the place wrote to the reverend father Junipero, were persons who had not gone to hear the missionaries.  The rumor of the epidemic having gone abroad, the people in other villages were dissatisfied with their clergy for admitting the missionaries; but when they heard that only those died who did not listen to the sermons, they became very punctual, not only the villagers, but the country people dwelling upon ranchos many leagues distant.

“Their apostolic labors having been finished, they were upon their way back, and at the end of a few days' journey, when the sun was about to set, they knew not where to spend the night and considered it certain that they must sleep upon the plain.  They were thinking about this when they saw near the road a house, whither they went and solicited lodging.  They found a venerable man, with his wife and child, who received them with much kindness and attention, and gave them supper.  In the morning, the Fathers thanked their hosts and taking leave, pursued their way.  After having gone a little distance they met some muleteers, who asked them where they had passed the night.  When the place was described, the muleteers declared that there was no such house or ranch near the road, or within many leagues.  The missionaries attributed to Divine Providence the favor of that hospitality and believed without doubt that these hosts were Jesus, Mary and Joseph, reflecting not only about the order and cleanness of the house (though poor), and the affectionate kindness with which they had been received, but also about the extraordinary internal consolation which their hearts had felt there.”

Dear Sisters and Brothers in the Lord,

It’s Advent and Christmas for our Toledo Cursillo Movement too!  We’re longing and anticipating, waiting and preparing to invite the Lord once again more deeply into our Movement.  It is not ‘same ol’”, here we go again or anything “usual.”  Christmas and Easter should never be, but we’re human and so we have to remind and encourage and even cajole one another to have true conversion moments.  This is one of them.

Many of you know that I try to accomplish this by looking, longing for the Christ in a special way each Christmas.  In years past, I have looked for the coming of the Jesus of Hope, the Jesus of Prayer, the Jesus of Peace and so on.  This year I am looking for the Jesus of Reconciliation.  I have come to that hope because of the animosity I feel all around, very often occasioned by the political turmoil we’re experiencing because of the economy, the health care reform, the scandals and our being at war.

I hear so often people speaking very derogatorily about our elected officials of all types, especially in partisan language about important factors like abortion and immigration.  I would love to hear respectful challenges to search together for truth, a best way and moral guidelines that would honor one another and let the real Spirit of Jesus have some sway in open hearts.

So, I’m preparing for this by examining my own life and conscience to discover where I fail to respect others who disagree with me and situations where I must stand up for the right I perceive in the face of opposition and disrespect.  My celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation I hope to be a real soul searching conversion experience that continues well into 2010.

In this Advent and Christmas journey I am especially caught up in our efforts to recapture the goodness of the Cursillo Movement and revitalize our desire to make friends, be friends and bring those friends to Jesus.  I’m looking for the enthusiasm with and for one another in the Movement that captures ourselves (one another) and others in excitement about changing our environments.  I’m looking for a renewed fervor which I can sustain and which will sustain me.  I’m one of those with a lot on my plate.  I’m taking a look at that so I can talk with others about priorities we can work together on.  I’m excited about a new Christmas for our area cores full of sisters and brothers willing to serve one another cuz I want to hear witnesses about efforts to make a difference in our world!

May YOU have a fruitful Advent and a very Spirit-filled Christmas.  Let’s celebrate the tremendous good we have  in the Movement!

Joyful ultreya,

Fr. Skip

PRAY PRAY PRAY

Please don't forget all the people that ask for our prayers last month.
There were many needs for prayers for those suffering with cancer.
Those that have been in accidents and dealing with the pain of all of that.
Those that are living in troubled relationships.
Many are jobless right now. They have more problems than we can imagine.
The young people that are caring for their elderly parents.
Those that are grieving the death of a loved one especially during this JOYOUS season .
Those that are facing surgeries of many kinds.
Many people are trying to sell their homes and having trouble doing so.
Those that have made a commitment to marriage and live out their new lives together.
Those with alzimers, dimentia.
Christ is counting on us to pray for others.  LET'S NOT DISAPPOINT HIM.

Witness from Florida

I will share the working of the Lord in my life in 2009.  In Feb, after two endoscopies, it was determined that I had very early stages of esouphageal cancer.  In late march I checked into the hospital for an operation to remove my esouphagus, a procedure which would require 7-10 days recovery in the hospital. Soooooo, after two months (1 month in each of two hospitals) and a total of six weeks on the vent in intensive care, I finally went home (late May.) During my stay I was diagnosed with blood clot, blood poison, diabetes, fluid around the lungs, potasium starved blood, pneumonia, and who knows----. Although some of my friends didn't stop praying, they have admitted to me that they really didn't think I would make it.

But wait--after being home 2 1/2 months I developed a stitchal (sp) hernia which was operated on Oct 22 (PAIN), and now, on Dec 10th, I am,hopefully in great health. By the way, a subsequent endoscopy shows NO cancer. Also, by the way, I entered the hospital at 217 lbs and am now 170-175 (but I don't recomend the diet plan.) Again, by the way, I don't remember anything about being in the first hospital (including my daughter's 10 day visit, my oldest son's 10 day visit, nor Marianne and my wedding vows renewal, something (I found out later) that can be healing. I remember only a few things in hospital #2 until approximately the last two weeks, after I was out of intensive care And now the rest of the story."

God is truly Great.-- Marianne prayed with me every day when I was in the hospital--- in the first hospital when I responded but didn't know it, and in hospital #2 when ;I suprised her by praying the Gaurdian Angel prayer after the prayers we had been saying daily.--History--Before I went in the hospital, I (in early March) had, as Lecture of the Knights of Columbus, given a little spiel on how, even as adults,we should continue to recognize and pray to our gaurdian angel. Well---When I started to know what was going on in hospital #2, I prayed the Gaurdian Angel prayer many times during the day-- when I was anxious, fearful, or felt I was losing control. Each time I prayed, I envisioned an angel hovering over me with his wings protecting me and my anxieties, and fears went away.--Did I just imagine this, or what? Marianne and I prayed often, together and with our kids after we made Cursillo in 1974, but had drifted away from that in later years. I thank the Lord that we are back to praying together, and will always do so.

"The Power of Prayer. "When I was in complete recovery I used to tell people that I had people praying for me from Alaska (daughter) to Flordia, and from San Fransico (nephew) to Pittsburgh (in-laws). Then I found out that one of our friends in Flordia had someone in Maine on her prayer chain----HELLO!!!!  God is truly Great.

One last thing --If you're ever in intensive care (whether you know it or not) and you survive, go back and visit (and meet) the nurses, doctors, and technicians and thank them. They (as the nurses told me ) don't often see their patients in the vertical position. It was obivious to me that it is not "just a job" to them--they are truly special. God has truly blessed us this year, and we wish you and yours a blessed Christmas and New Year.

Peace, Love, and Ultreya, Earl & Marianne Zimmerle
(#'s72 & 73 in'74)

For those of you that did not have the blessing to meet Earl and Marianne, they were Cursillistas from Lima and Earl was a Power House.  He was so alive with the Spirit, I sometimes wondered how he kept his feet on the ground.  This witness truly brought tears to my eyes.  OUR GOD IS A GREAT GOD........Earle found us by going to our Toledo website.  He commented on how bad he felt that the Ultreyas were not as alive as they were when they left.

Do you like burnt biscuits?
Maybe you will after you read this story.

When I was a little girl, my mom liked to make breakfast food for dinner every now and then.
And I remember one night in particular when she had made breakfast after a long, hard day at work.
On that evening so long ago, my mom placed a plate of eggs, sausage and extremely burned biscuits
in front of my dad. I remember waiting to see if anyone noticed!  Yet all my dad did was reach for his
biscuit, smile at my mom and ask me how my day was at school.  I don't remember what I told him
that night, but I do remember watching him smear butter and jelly on that biscuit and eat every bite.
When I got up from the table that evening, I remember hearing my mom apologize to my dad for
burning the biscuits.

And I'll never forget what he said: “Baby, I love burned biscuits.”  Later that night, I went to kiss
Daddy good night and I asked him if he really liked his biscuits burned.  He wrapped me in his arms
and said, “Your momma put in a hard day at work today and she's real tired. And besides –
a little burnt biscuit never hurt anyone!”

==
You know, life is full of imperfect things......and imperfect people.  I'm not the best housekeeper
or cook.  What I've learned over the years is that learning to accept each other's faults-
and choosing to celebrate each other's differences- is one of the most important keys to
creating a healthy, growing, and lasting relationship.

And that's my prayer for you today.  That you will learn to take the good, the bad and ugly
parts of your life and lay them at the feet of God.  Because in the end, He's the only One
who will be able to give you a relationship where a burnt biscuit isn't a deal- breaker!

We could extend this to any RELATIONSHIP in fact as understanding the base of any
relationship, be it a husband-wife or parent-child or friendship!

Don't put the key to your happiness in someone else's pocket-
Keep it in your own.

Please remember to pray for all of those people who have asked for our prayers in the past.
We don't know when we will need so many prayers from so many dear friends to help us
through our difficulties in life.

We had many people suffering with cancer.
Many facing surgeries.
Many others had loved ones that left this world and their grieving is difficult.
Others had new babies born into their families.
Still others have relationship problems.
Many are jobless and looking for a job.
The economy is depressing for many people.
The families who have loved ones serving our country for our freedom need prayers.
Accident victims and their families.
People who have Bully bosses .
Our Cursillo Movement and its leaders.
All of our Veterans who served our country.
The list goes on even to those who were effected by the shooting at Fort Hood, Texas.
Christ is counting us to pray for others.
Let's not disappoint Him.

Toledo Diocesan Cursillo Mission Statement

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Dear friends,
Two recent occurrences prompt the topic of this letter. One is the recent outbursts of
undisciplined anger at town hall meetings on health care. The other is the death of Senator Edward
Kennedy, dubbed the Lion of the Senate for both his fiery speeches and his respect for those ‘across the
aisle.’ Anger is the common denominator, but the way anger is handled is decidedly different. Anger is
a powerful emotion, given to us by God to help us protect people and values that need protection.
However, anger, being only a motivating force, needs the guidance of discretion, respect and control or
it will become a wildfire. A generation of TV watchers has been subtly formed by the popular notion
that speaking one’s mind and acting out one’s feelings indiscriminately are justified, irrespective of
another’s dignity or the benefit such anger offers to society. Too often rudeness, put-downs and
sarcastic remarks (all forms of anger) are favorably judged with great outbursts of laughter or applause
from the audience on sit-coms and ‘who’s got talent’ shows. Isn’t it time to reclaim anger for its God-
intended purpose?

The higher side of us knows that people are to be respected and treated with dignity, even when
we strongly disagree with their values and opinions. Didn’t we learn that in kindergarten? However,
we’ve also learned that ‘stuffing’ our anger is not the solution either. So what are we to do when anger
flares inside us?

Over the years I’ve picked up some good advice from various sources* that I offer for your own
reflection. It begins with one’s attitude about anger. If I see anger as a negative emotion, I will deny it
when it flares in me, and the energy generated by anger will be stored in me. Long-term storing of
anger can cause physical reactions such as head-aches, skin problems, high blood pressure, strokes
and heart attacks, digestive problems. It can also lead to eating and sleeping disorders, drug and
alcohol abuse, sexual acting out, depression and boredom, passive aggressive behavior (slamming
doors, deceit, silence, sugary-sweetness, aggressive driving habits, etc.).

If I see anger as a positive emotion, created by God for the purpose of protecting someone or
something that deserves protection, I have a choice: to let the anger be destructive or constructive.
Destructive anger can take on various forms: 1) direct hostility, in which I treat another as an enemy;
2) Displaced hostility, in which I “take out” my anger on a “safe person;” 3) apathetic hostility in which
I ignore the problem, choosing to be uninvolved; or 4) free-floating hostility, in which I attack anyone,
anytime, over anything. Constructive anger takes the enormous energy that comes from the rush of
adrenalin and channels it into creative solutions to the problem(s) at hand. Constructive anger engages
our intellect and will, our physical endurance and the resources of our moral and ethical values to make
a positive difference in the life of another or in the quality of life we share in common.

How do I move from sudden, over-reactive and uncontrollable explosions of temper to harness
the tremendous energy needed for positive change? Here’s a method of dealing with anger that I’ve
found helpful. It comes in several steps.

Calm down so I am free to make a wise decision about how to express this anger appropriately.
I can do that by temporarily removing myself physically from the situation that spawned the angry
reaction. Physical exercise is another helpful way to siphon off some of the potent energy so that I can
engage my intellect and value system. Meditation, deep breathing, doodling or journaling, and
listening to soothing music are other ways that people have found helpful to get through the first surge
of high-powered anger.

Once I have calmed down, I can allow myself to feel the anger without worrying that it will get
out of hand. I can examine how intense the anger is. Perhaps writing a letter to the person,
but not
sending it
can also let me experience the anger in a controlled setting.

Think through the anger. What is the cause? What has triggered the feeling? What belief that
I hold is the REAL cause of my anger in this situation? Once I have the cause determined, I rate its
importance; e.g., is it a personal preference or an injustice that I feel called to defend or change? Then
I examine and strive to purify my motives for responding to this anger; e.g. Will I confront the person
in order to preserve our friendship or is it to get even? Good questions to ask myself at this stage are:
Is my anger justified? What are my true motives for expressing my anger? Is the intensity of my anger
a help or a hindrance to finding a solution? Am I treating the offending person with dignity? Or am I
communicating the message that the person is stupid, insensitive, immature, ill-intentioned, neurotic, or
immoral? Am I open to the possibility that I could be totally or partially wrong in my perception of the
situation? Am I open to the possibility that I may have, directly or indirectly contributed to the
problem? Am I allowing myself to feel other emotions in addition to anger, e.g., compassion, mercy,
kindness, forgiveness… or do I have a vested interest in feeling only 100% high octane anger?

Talk over the situation with someone who can be objective and helpful in sorting it out. This
is a tricky step. We can be tempted to do this before we have gone through the above steps. If we
‘vent’ to a sympathetic ear too early in the process, we typically find that we have only justified and
intensified our anger. But once we have worked through the initial steps in dealing with anger and are
no longer looking for sympathy as much as truth, this conversation can be very helpful.

Act in a freely chosen and appropriate way. I may choose to talk directly with the person
involved. I may need to change the beliefs that are the cause of my anger. I may choose to channel my
energy into an organization that is dedicated to righting the wrong that so offends me. I may choose to
forgive the offender. These are just a few possible choices that I can make, but each of them is a
healthier response to anger than just “letting it fly” as it surfaces in us. Jesus modeled the appropriate
expression of anger without attacking another’s dignity and worth. If we follow him, chances are we’ll
be generating more light than heat when situations arise that prompt an angry reaction. And doesn’t
our world need
that?

A DECADE A DAY

SCHOOL OF LEADERS
SEPTEMBER 19, 2009
9:00-NOON
ST. MIKE'S
FINDLAY, SCHOOL TEACHERS' LOUNGE.

BELOW IS AN OUTLINE OF MARYANN HOHMAN'S PRESENTATION FOR THE DAY.

Leaders’ Manual - Chapter 5
The Role of the Cursillo Leaders

The worst enemies of a movement are those who become its promoters without
understanding it
(pg. 39, Leaders’ Manual).

This chapter discusses the role of the Cursillo leader, and the importance of personal contact.
Leaders in the Cursillo movement know and understand the importance of personal contact. It
is not just a one time event, but needs to take place starting with Precursillo and continuing into
the new Cursillistas’ Fourth Day.

The chapter presents a technique of personal contact for Cursillo leaders. There are three stages
of effective personal contact: to know; to evaluate; and to direct. To know and to evaluate are
commonly know as ‘sounding’ in the Spanish Cursillo literature. Sounding is meant to sound out
a person’s opinion on a topic. This process cannot be rushed. If the candidate feels pressured,
he/she will close down. This defeats the purpose of personal contact. Sounding needs to take
place at appropriate times, in the context of normal conversation, and never at times that put the
person off.
It is of the utmost importance that we realize that we are taking care of God’s interests (pg. 46, Leaders’ Manuel).

The last part of the technique, to direct, is also know as stabbing or prodding in the Spanish
literature. It is a way of directing, or enlightening the candidate to the workings of Christ in his/
her life. It must be noted that this part of the technique needs to be undertaken only by mature
Christians, being lead by God, and have a sense of the sacredness of the personal contact being
made. If this care is not taken, real damage could be done to the candidate. Prayer before this
type of personal contact is attempted is a must.
Talk to God about man, before talking to man
about God. And: Talk to God about man, after talking to man about God
(pg. 47, Leader’s
Manual).

Misuse of the technique can make a mockery of the Lord’s work, and damage peoples’ lives. The
leaders of the movement were aware of this, and encourage Cursillo leaders to know when and
where to refer people as needed.

The personal contact technique can be thought of as glorified common sense. This comes
naturally
to some people. It is important though to know our own areas of blindness and
weaknesses. These can interfere with using effective personal contact skills. Each leader
needs to work to improve the
effectiveness of his/her personal contact skills by studying,
in a prayerful way, through the School of
Leaders, and having the help of other Christians,
as well as Jesus Christ, to learn to effectively use
personal contact skills.

The Secretariat is still studying the By-Laws for the Cursillo Movement of the diocese of Toledo and
the responsibilities of each position chairperson on the diocesan level. This is no easy task.
Please keep us all in prayer. We meet the 4th

Thanks to all of you who supported Gus and I celebrating our 50th Wedding anniversary.

It was a very special celebration at Mass at St. Bernardine's at 11:00. Fr. Ray Fisher let
us
renew our marriage vows. Now we really know what those words,
“in sickness and in health”
mean. In 1959 we were thinking “ headaches, the flu, toothaches, injuries to the body etc.
We can handle those things.
Now in 2009, we have experienced my breast cancer and Gus' diabetes through these years. So those vows were extra special and very emotional because of what we have lived through and supported each other along the way.
Also in 1959 our family was GUS AND I.

NOW----2009
WE ARE ENJOYING 3 LIVING ADOPTED ADULT CHILDREN
2 SONS WAITING FOR US IN HEAVEN.
A WONDERFUL SON-IN-LAW
A DAUGHTER-IN-LAW THAT IS MY NEIGHBOR
5 WONDERFUL GRANDCHLDREN
2 VERY SPECIAL GREAT GRANDCHILDREN
AND ONE SPECIAL LITTLE FRIEND, MICHEAL.
The reception at Ole Zims was great also.
Good food, good company.

Again, thanks for your friendship. Gus and Pat Miller

PRAYER VINE

Please continue to pray for all of those on our prayer list.
I received word today that Myra Schwab went to her eternal home.
Please pray for her as she meets God and all of her relatives and friends and for her
wonderful family that is grieving her death.

We have had many prayer requests during June.

These are some reminders that these people are counting on us for prayer support and
Christ is counting on us to respond.

Many requests for cancer patients. Colon/rectal, ovarian, esophagus, brain, breast, liver,
intestines, and probably others that were not identified in the request.
All of the graduates and those that are job seeking.
Staff infection in hip to be healed so surgery can be done.
Mass on spine. Neck problem. Learning to walk and talk all over again.
Knee surgery, Tests being done in baby in womb , Parkinson patient broken rib ,
gall bladder surgery, pacemaker put in, mental stress due to death of brother.
Body adjusting to medications, travelers to Belize, those dealing with extreme stress
on the job, more patience for many of us, non-Hodgkin lymphoma of young husband
and father, young girl with broken leg, internal bleeding to be diagnosed,
stomach tumor, 13 year old girl suffering with cancer since she was 6 years old,
hysterectomy, financial problems of many, broken relationships, open heart surgeries,
near fatal accident patients, broken hip, kidney stones, rotator cuff surgery,
knee surgery, all surgeons, extreme blood work due to leukemia, 90 year old woman
who fell, foot surgery, hospice patients, those recently married, knee replacement.
Cursillo team members, unborn babies in womb with health problems, shoulder surgery,
all travelers, emotional issues, eye surgery, all hospital patients and care givers,
good general health. New grandchild. All those serving our country for our freedom,
All leaders in our church and world to bring us closer to Jesus Christ.

Please don't forget these needs. All of them are very serious to someone. That is why they
ask for our support. They know the power of prayer.

Toledo Diocesan Cursillo Mission Statement
Cursillo is a Catholic Lay Movement embraced by the Diocese of Toledo to bring hearts closer to Jesus Christ in order to transform society and be of service to the whole church.  It is Our mission to form small Christian Communities to deepen Spirituality in others and us.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A few days ago I was reviewing the “job description” for Spiritual Advisors of the Toledo
Diocesan Cursillo Movement and came across this sentence: “Emphasize and model the vital role
of prayer and palanca in the movement.” Palanca, we’re told as we get introduced to the word,
means “lever” or “crow bar” – something which helps move an object when ordinary strength isn’t enough.
It’s not an exaggeration to say that we wouldn’t have a Cursillo movement without it. There is a
strength needed to accept the invitation from Christ to be his special disciple and apostle that goes
beyond what most of us have within us. We would more likely say, “I’m not worthy; I’m not holy
enough; I’m just an ordinary person; I’m not a leader.” There is a strength needed to persevere in the
method for it’s so easy to slip into, “Not this week; I’m too busy… I joined a parish prayer group
instead…, etc.” There is a strength needed to keep caring for one another, because in any long-term
relationship (and that’s what the Fourth Day is) there will inevitably be tensions, misunderstandings,
hurt feelings, etc. that will tempt us to walk away from anything “Cursillo” and never look back.
Veryiterally, palanca is the glue that keeps the community together It is the spiritual adrenalin to get us
going, and our constant support to keep us going.

There is a difference between palanca and palanca letters. Palanca is the actual prayer,
sacrifices and good deeds that we do, offered for the good of others. The letters we write are merely
vehicles of communication in which we reveal the specific palanca we have done or are doing.
Sometimes we confuse the two. Let’s say you were never good at grammar or writing but there is a
Cursillo weekend coming up and you decide to write every candidate and every team member a
personal letter (because it’s hard and you hate to do it). You tell them what a good person they are
and how you hope they will have a great time on the weekend. You may be putting yourself ‘through
the mill’ but that’s not necessarily palanca, because instead of praying or fasting or doing a good
deed for a neighbor you are using all your time and energy writing letters! Think about it; wouldn’t a
better “lever” be to spend that amount of time before the Blessed Sacrament opening yourself to the
Holy Spirit and asking the Spirit to move among the team and candidates? Or doing some spiritual
reading which can make us all more receptive to God? Or making a special effort to visit a disgruntled
neighbor who is in a nursing home? Or fasting and letting your hunger open both you and the
candidates to deeper dimensions of God? And when you have done so, jot a note to the whole group
and let them know of your support. I’m not even going to comment on roses, candy, stuffed animals,
toys, greeting cards, balloons, pins, statues, bookmarks and “hang-ons” – not palanca, right?

That brings me to the issue of general palanca letters and individual letters. Hopefully, you
don’t tell God that you intend your prayers and sacrifices and good deeds to benefit N and N and N,
but not N and N and N! Of course not! We want the Spirit to touch everyone! Our palanca is therefore
offered for everyone. So writing one letter addressed to all is really sufficient to communicate your
palanca, not so? Yes, yes, if you are close friends with a few of the team members or are sponsoring
a candidate and want to write a personal letter, go ahead, but maybe that note is better given to them
before the weekend as they prepare, or afterwards when they get back home.

I’ve seen personal palanca letters distract from the formation of a community on a Cursillo
weekend. By the time palanca is introduced on Friday afternoon people are beginning to “get into” the
talks and table discussions. This may the first real taste of Christian community they’ve ever had.
They may begin to share their faith and lived experience in a way they’ve never done before. The
palanca (which they hear about through a few general letters) being done by people who don’t even
know them is incredible. Then they typically get a stack of personal letters. Some of them may be
from people who don’t even know what palanca is… their kids, their spouse, their co-workers. What
happens?  Their mind goes right out the door and is immediately back home, thinking about all those
relationships instead of being fully here, in this place, forming something new, open to what God may
want to do here. Just about the time they’ve all mentally come back to the room, more letters are
distributed, and once more the community-under-construction is disbanded and unwittingly ‘sent back home.’

Then there is the problem of some people getting more letters than others. So rather than
spending personal contact time with candidates, in order to address this inequity, a group of team
members gets busy behind the scenes and jots off quick notes to even the score. (We wouldn’t want
envy to spoil the experience). I don’t know if the letters represent any extra palanca… perhaps just
more letters. There’s a difference.

I write all this a bit wary that I may have to wear armor the next time I come to a Cursillo
gathering! I’m not laying down rules; I’m just trying to get us to take a closer look at what we are
doing and to challenge all of us to ask ourselves, “Do our Cursillo customs and traditions make
sense?”  “Is my palanca authentic?” “Has my notion of palanca gotten soft and fuzzy to the point of
no longer providing the spiritual strength the movement and all the people in it really need?” “What is
essential and what is not?” “On what will I focus my time and energy?”

I realize I’ve written mostly about palanca for the Cursillo weekend, but our entire movement
needs it all the time, especially as we try to revitalize. I better stop for now. Pray, sacrifice and work
for the coming of God’s reign. Those levers will not fail to move the objects that we, on our own, can’t
budge.

DEATH OF JACK SPRINGER

Jack, Michael McCartney and Walt Schweickert were the "brain trust" of the movement in
the1960's and 70's. They did more than anyone else to keep the early movement on track and
consistent with the writings of the Cursillo founders. The fact that we have a solid movement
today is due in great part to their insistence--not always delivered gently!!--that we stay "on
track" and not modify the movement--the MOVEMENT, not the weekend--in ways that
undermined the essential thrust of the movement to evangelize environments....not just be a
spiritual boost to individuals. Cursillo was doing evangelization 20-30 years before that term
became a bit more recognized in the wider church.
Lost a great man...to whom we owe much.
Michael McCartney died about a year ago...and Walt Schweickert back in the 1980's.
Fr. Charles Ritter
(Fr. Chuck is a former Spiritual Director of our Movement)

Another tribute to Jack Springer and his wonderful wife, Helen who passed away one month
earlier.

Jack and Helen Springer- Dedicated to the founders – NO nonsense- Say it like it is, not like
what people want to hear. Did not want to change for the sake of change. “Faith in Action”.
They were good people for sure.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope everyone had a blessed and glorious Easter.  This will have to be our communication for the month.  Holy week was very busy for Gus and I because we had to make the most of every minute of it.

That is why I did not get the ARK out early.  I myself was dealing with some deep anger in my heart and had to let it go before Easter and I did.  God's grace is so amazing and peaceful.  Then on Easter morning as we walked in the door from attending Mass, the phone was ringing and it was our daughter, Chris in Texas.  She was crying and had to tell us that her father-in-law had passed away one hour before that.

So the table was set for our family to celebrate our Easter dinner, without Chris and her family for the first time.  The food was prepared and ready to serve and the people were here.  We did continue to celebrate the great feast with many emotions in our hearts.

Easter Monday I began getting ready for the family to stay here while they were back in Ohio.  Monday was especially busy, and they arrived Tuesday evening and will be here until Friday.  So there is no time available to do the ARK as it should be done, but I will send you the important reminders.

Decolores,
Our vacation to Florida turned out to be a Pilgrimage for Gus and I.

When we arrived at downtown St. Augustine, the first place of interest in walking distance was the Mission Nombre de Dios (Name of God).  It was where the colonial and religious history of this country began.  That was September 8, 1565.  This is where the Spaniards celebrated their first Mass.  It is a beautiful sight today.  It has a lovely gift shop, which we visited and bought just a few items, one of them being a book:  Chicken Soup for the Soul Living Catholic Faith.  Gus and I read this book to one another on the way home.  We really encourage you to buy a copy if you find it anywhere.  It touched our hearts so deeply that we both wept.

We also visited the Basilica-Cathedral of Saint Augustine. This building was begun in 1793 and dedicated in 1797.  The parish records date back to 1594.  It too, is beautiful.  As we walked down St. George St to see it, we noticed the Bishop in the courtyard having his picture taken with people.  We snapped some pictures of him and kept walking along the line of people as we headed to enter the Cathedral.

There was a man standing in line with a “ROOSTER” TIE on.  Well, we had to stop and ask him if he was a Cursillista.  Of course!  He told us the bishop was there for the Rite of Election for the RCIA members.
Wow, what a close moment.

When we were enjoying the hot tub, I sat next to a lady who was there because her son's house burned down and she came to St. Augustine to help the family find housing.  She shared a lot about her past disappointments with this son and how she still has TRUST in GOD to see them through.

We went to Mass Sunday morning at Our Lady of Good Counsel parish.  The priest that celebrated Mass was from Nigeria.  We were so WELCOMED by those parishioners we could not believe it was a Catholic Church.  People stood in line to greet us!!!!!  We had many good conversations after Mass during the coffee/donut socialization that we were invited to.  Gus had his Cursillo cross on, and of course with all the Spanish people in the area, a beautiful woman asked him if he was a Cursillista.  So that created another great conversation.

This priest, Fr. Tony, was a real gift.  He sang part of his homily.  He mentioned that he was going to start the 4 day mission there at 7:00 that evening  and the topic was, “Light unto my Path”.  We asked if we could come to the mission and were more than welcome.  We went Sunday night and Monday night but we left for home on Tuesday morning, so we missed the rest.  What a powerful 2 nights he presented to us.  He sang both of those nights during his presentation also.

We really felt a need to get away on this vacation and now we know why.  We were truly blessed by God over and above what we ever expected.

Ultreya, Pat Miller
